Day 73 - Saturday, May 31, 2008

Day 73

Well you know today I have absolutely nothing to do so again I stayed home and watched a tonne of Naruto cartoons. I eventually went to the super market then ate dinner at joyful and oh how I hate to go these places all by myself... The constant stares and the quiet laughs are annoying to say the least. While I was eating in joyful, I saw this kid passed the window staring at me endlessly, so I nodded my head and he waved his hand and said goodbye. I then caught another kid staring at me shortly after with his dad, then when they noticed that I saw them, they turned away quickly and started laughing. Boy oooh boy, when will it end??? I thought everyone in this community knows that I am around now... While I was paying for my food at joyjul, I was frightened when I heard "Hey DAVE".... I jumped and turned around to see the guy who keep the football training for the kids on Thursdays. He had 2 of him bredrins dem wid him and dem look shocked to see me... He said, "these are my friends", then they slowly waved their hands at me with this "wow a black guy" look on their faces... I then drove home and watched more Naruto. Tomorrow (Sunday), I have work and a day off on Tuesday...

Day 72 - Friday, May 30, 2008

Day 72

Went to my furthest school today on an almost empty tank of gas. I got there though and as ususal, the day at school went well. I have a video clip of about 5 mins or so, of me teaching... I might upload it briefly on youtube or here one of these days then take it down back.

Guess what happend today??? I GOT PAID!!!!HORAYYY first time since February 2008 I am getting paid and it felt sooo good, you have no idea of the joy I feel today :).. And the pay is good too, as in the amount of money :) :) :) well that`s in comparison to the last jobs I had ;) I went to the post office to withdraw some money from the post office ATM and when I was heading in my car, I notice this Japanese man acting like he was fixing a window when he was really there staring at me. Some of the Japanese think they have a slick way of staring at you, and they dont think we foreigners are very much aware of it...

So after the post office, I drove back again on an empty gas tank because there was no gas station nearby this remotely located school. I was praying so hard that the car dont shut off in the road, but thank God I got to a gas station in time and full up the tank. This should last me until next Friday. I went football practice today then went home and spoke to my mother and sister.

Day 71 - Thursday, May 29, 2008

Day 71

It seem as if I was about to spoil my never yet late (always at least 10 mins before work start) record this morning because of this internet... SO I did some amount of fast driving this morning and some over taking on the highway... well I got there 9 mins before my work time and that wasnt so bad...

As it was about to touch 6pm which is soccer practice with the kids time, the man that drop us to the English conversation class thing on Wednesdays, called me out of the blue. He said we should meet at joyful in 5 mins (bwoy these Japanese have a different way of doing things). He then told me that anytime I want to go somewhere just call him. He also wants to introduce me to his wife and kids because they have never ever had contact in any way with a black person.

I played soccer with the kids today and I guess because I am feeling sick, I wasn't running up and down too much at all.

So after this was finished, I went to another ALT get together and this one was known as "Breakfast night"... Each Thursday they give it another name.. Last week was Japanese Dumpling night (I dont <---really like these at all), ITs nothing like the Jamaican dumplin dem... I normally get to these get together business late because of the football thing that I go to before... So almost always when I get there, the food is done or about to be finished. Then some one would jump and run to prepare something... I cant believe they ate off all the pan cakes not even 1 mi get... All now mi still vex ... Any way, one of the ALTs from the USA said he teach this kid at a Jr high school that dont talk to anybody except her mom for the past 7 years... He said she dont talk at school or to anyone, but when they give her work to do, she does it well... He said she is not sickly or anything at all wrong with her... She just dont speak to anyone at all...????

Well any way, laterz

Day 70 - Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Day 70

Went to my main school today and after lunch, I saw a bunch of kids and their teachers changing off into some shorts and t shirt and dem tings... I was wondering what was going on??? Then I realised that they were about to clean the school 's pool. Now, I was told by the kochosensei (principal) that almost every single elementary school in Japan, has a swimming pool. They dont hire any body but they themselves along with the kids clean the pool.

Of course because I had nothing to do I had to be there :) WORSE the principal!!! The principal asked me to try out the pool broom thing so I said ok lets see how this goes.. This explains the photo of me in my tie doing dirty work... Hey I love this job :) Later today the principal showed me some baby ducks that they bought to put on the rice field... The baby ducks will eat the insects that try to mess up the rice plant... they also fenced around the ducks and put electricity on the fence in case some fox or bird try to eat the ducks... I hear that a couple of the teachers well, accidentally get shocked by the fence, not remembering that the current is there... The principal then showed me a dead baby snake while we were walking back to the car parking lot... DEAD SNAKE???? I dont like the idea of snakes being around me, whether poisonous or not. And Yes people, I am well aware that I need a hair cut but nooooo nooo, I will wait a bit, trimming too expensive...

I found out that Jamaica actually has a meaning in Japanese...

JAMA - Means obstacle
IKA - Means cuttlefish

To Patrice and Stewart, the prefecture that my friend is in that is having the racial problem is a place name AICHI - and the capital is Nagoya (they dont want no Niga ya) ... Another friend email me while I was writing this blog, and she said she is facing some ridiculous racism as well. She said some kids stoned her the other day and a kid and their parent, pointed at her and laughed at her... I was in shock when I read her email... she is in a prefecture called CHIBA... This is the prefecture that we went to for training. The girl went as far as to tell me that some Japanese would spit and cough whenever she walk by... ITs not the first I hearing this from someone either... My Jamaican friend in Hiroshima said the same thing happen to her too with the spit and cough business... I had nooo clue that this type of thing happened in Japan. Sigh!!!

Day 69 - Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Day 69 <--(Fire !!!)

I learned that there is actually a Pokemon and a Pikachu plane here in Japan...Thats how popular pokemon is here...

I taught grades 1, 2 and 3 today at this school...There is this grade 1 kid who seem to be extremely facinated by the existence of a black person. Every now and again when I am teaching he occassionally run up and grab on to my shirt or try to poke me in the side or something...The class room teachers (3 of them) had to be drawing him away from me every minute. Then after class was finished, a couple of genky (very excited) kids attacked me and blocked off the door entrance, they surrounded me trying to touch my hair and not even the teachers could hold them back...I remembered one of them touching my hair and said "sponge" lol.. Boy I tell you, the many traumas of being a foreigner (especially a black foreigner) in rural Japan...

I realised today that apparently, nose bleeding is a popular sickness or something in Japan, especially when they get too excited it seem...Its even depicted in some of their cartoons.

I saw the guy who live on my apartment complex today riding a bicycle and I shouted "Gyjin"...Then when I was about to park he rode up to me and said Gyjin is actually like a bad word for foreigners.. I had no clue that it was seen as a bad word...Because I actually know the alien registration card as a "Gyjin card"...Hmmm well now I know ... anyway I asked him why is he riding and not driving???...He then said because his international driver`s licence expired, our company decided to take away HIS car from him of fear that he might drive it and meet in an accident???...Now, if your international driver`s licence expire, you are going to have to get a JAPANESE driver`s licence...This takes maybe 2 months or more to process...Luckily, this guy`s schools are nearby...I am wondering what will happen to me on March 8, 2009 which is when my licence expire????...My nearest school is like 20 mins and my furthest is 45 mins away BY DRIVING!!!! And all of them I have to drive through a tunnel... Up until this day, I am yet to see a bicycle riding through a tunnel.....Dem betta cut the crap...

Today I went bed about 9:30 pm instead of the normal 12 midnight and after 1am business... I didnt even go to soccer training...I was invited to come to this meditation thing today as well but I was a little too tired.

For those who didnt see the other video of the taue on my facebook profile, here it is. And I am not crazy ok... DWL... I crack myself up sometimes...

Day 68 - Monday, May 26, 2008

Day 68

Went to my main school today and only taught 2 classes. This was because they had the Taue (pronounced "ta who eh" ) business where they plant rice and get some old people to make up some noise with their drums. All of this is done while the old people with drums make further noise by singing in old Japanese that not even the Japanese teachers at the school fully understand... I hope the videos that I am about to upload will play properly... I also uploaded a video on my face book profile, so if you have a face book account check this one out http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=44439500525&ref=nf

I then went to bible study. After bible study, one of the Japanese who come there, helped me to full out the re - entry permit request form which I will try to hand in at the city next Monday which will be my day off because I have to work this coming Sunday. I also plan to go to the German Embassy in Osaka that day. Please pray fi mi because as you know, it is not very difficult for me to get lost in Japan at all.

Day 67 - Sunday, May 25, 2008

Day 67

I spoke to my mom, my aunt and 3 of my cousins today. They called me early in the morning at about 7 am (5pm Saturday in Jamaica), just to check how I was doing. They were reminding me of some of my dub poems...Hey I havent performed one since April....Its the frist time since like 2004 that a full month has almost passed and I dont perform a dub poem...

Went to the Japanese church today (Niimi Christ Church) and more people turned out.. About 17 of us were there today, inclusive of some high school students from China who are now living in Japan...These students from China can speak 4 different languages. They speak Chinese (of course), Korean, English and Japanese.. in that order of fluency...They speak English better than Japanese but for some strange reason they feel they should talk to me in Japanese...Well thats partly because I am bluffing like I know Japanese :) The Japan government has a rigourous programme going on to attempt to get more people in their country, because the student population is declining very fast...They already shut down several elementary schools and some only have as little as 4 students...Yes a big elementary school building with only 4 students in the entire school. Japan is also trying to get people from other countries to come into their universities....It seem as if they are on a last resort thing because as I said previously, many of the Japanese in the country side, behave very strange towards foreigners...I am now having a flashback on the plane when I was heading here...I was asking this Japanese lady something and I remember seeing like the lady almost scorning me and based on her expression almost like saying "hey dont touch me"...But again I could be over thinking...
... After church we got a lot of food, this is very good for me :)...We ate curry and rice, Water Melon, potato chips, Spinach and all kind of mix up mix up...

After church I again locked up in my apartment and watched more Naruto, Final Fantasy - 7 Last Order and Iron Man then before you know it, its like 12 mid night...

Day 66 - Saturday, May 24, 2008

Day 66

Stayed in all day, didnt even open my door for some fresh air... Well I did briefly but rain was falling...The rainy season (All of June) is about to begin so I guess these are the warning signals.
All I did today was watch Naruto, read my bible and
watch a movie name 88 minutes...I am still feeling a little sick and coughing every now and again... I hope it go away soon.

Day 65 - Friday, May 23, 2008

Day 65

When I got up this morning I felt as if I was catching a serious cold...Sorry to gross you out but I spat out some strange looking mucous and my head felt funny... And I have absolutely no plans to go to any doctor in Japan, Im sorry... I think this hot /cold whether is taking its toll. The days are very hot, nights and mornings are cold.

I went to the school that I always make a wrong turn at today...and guess what??? I made a wrong turn again :) but I realised it instantly and spin round the car same time... When ever I get to that intersection I just dont know where to turn...Is when mi turn now mi realise dat is a wrong turn... So now last week at this school I asked the vice principal and the teacher for the grade 4 and 5 (Joined classes) classes if I could video it this week. They said "Yes man everything criss".. I wanted to video it because I think this class I have the most fun with and I want to show people what I do for a living now :) ... So today when the vice principal saw the cameras...she started looking on me funny and I see the Principal start looking at me weird and scratch him chin.... Then the vice principal ask me why I wanted to video the class...I said for memories to look back on...Then she asking me bout if its for my company and I said "NO its for me"... The place just started to feel tense and then I wanted to say "Just dont bother please, if it is going to be a problem" But I dont know how to say that to them to make them understand...So I went to the class and the teacher video it for me and so far I dont hear my company call, ... So far so good... But I heard them call my name in a conversation and said ALT several times...I also heard them talking to the vice principal from my main school... Hmmm I am hoping for the best...
So after work I went to soccer practise and this time my team did a little better...we only got
3 - 2...Isnt that remarkable from the 7-0 whopping on Tuesday??? Soccer is fun but bwooy my feet start to ache terribly now and this injury that mi have from mussy high school days start act up back again.

I started to read some articles about black people living in Japan...This is one of the links... Its a little long but interesting...The guy is from USA so that might be the only draw back, but he is black... http://www.blacktravels.com/japan.html

This is a quote from him that I found funny "How do the Japanese perceive Blacks? Remember the analogy of how a Japanese seeing a foreigner is like a child seeing an elephant for the first time? Well, if you are black, it's more like a child seeing a unicorn. Most Japanese have heard about unicorns such as Eddie Murphy, Michael Jordan, or Whitney Houston, but to see a real one is unimaginable."

He also said this that I found interesting " Japanese tend to idolize whites over any other group of people. This is evident in their advertisements, magazines, and even in their much-cherished animations. I knew better than to ask why there aren't many Black characters in their animations, but I did often ask why most of the characters look white instead of Japanese. One show that worries me and which has been a huge success in America is called Dragonball. Dragonball is a highly imaginative story, which places good characters against evil ones and has characters of varying moral hues in between. There are two aspects of the show which raises my eyebrows: (1) The character of Mr. Popo (jet black, big eyes, big red lip charachter with African accent) (2) The main hero, Goku, looks very Japanese (black hair and dark brown eyes). But later, when he becomes more powerful and reaches a higher level of energy, his hair becomes blonde and his eyes become blue. No comment."

In the article He also mentioned that there is a term Gorrira that sound like gorilla that they might use in their private talks....When I saw this I got an immediate flash back of something that happend at my Thursday school last week... This teacher that I just have this feeling that he doesnt really like me around, named one of the teams in a game with kids, "Mountain Gorilla" Then in the game he placed the name of some Japanese cities then USA ???? I am now wondering if he was being racist plus to top it off basically saying "Why didnt they get someone from the USA"... But maybe just maybe I am reading into this too much...
It really sucks to be somewhere and everybody looking at you like a damn animal to rhatid...What the hell is wrong with these people??? I am only happy that the schools I am at they at least try to treat me well even if its hypocritically... I think I feel the genuine care and love from some of the people and teachers, but others I am just watching dem...

Well people later....

Day 64 - Thursday, May 22, 2008

Day 64

Went to my main school today again because the school I was to go to today was gone on some picnic business, so all I did was sat around the computer from 9 am - 4 pm.. Well no a lie, I ate lunch and played football for about 10 minutes.

I got a text message on my phone saying that my phone bill will be ready soon...I went on the internet via my phone and saw the impending phone bill and it never look pretty. IMMEDIATELY I went into a state of depression, because one of the calls that conributed to this bill in a major way, was a half hour call I made to Jamaica which made absolutely no sense whatsoever...most of the local calls I made were to find out information about Germany and them tings... I must admit that when I was driving back to my apartment I was just out of it and started to wonder why the heck am I in this country??? So when I got to the apartment, the first thing I did was to read my bible and the daily bread...Surprisingly, the over arching theme for today in the daily bread is "Dont worry" based on Matthew 6:25 - 34... Surely, I tell you this really encouraged me and I felt much better afterward. God is good... I must admit that if you are not good at encouraging yourself, dont come to this country... So Patrice, thats my warning to you...

I called one of my friends who went on the interview to come to Japan with me, today... She said in her prefecture, the persons there are down right RACIST... She said even on the trains if she sit beside some of them, they immediately get up and sit elsewhere.. she said its so bad sometimes that even when she go out to empty garbage or something, the neighbours would go in quickly... and sometimes when they see her coming their way, they either walk the other way or walk far away from her in addition to giving her the death stare... Bwoy so far I havent experienced this but just to let you know that the racism thing is here... I heard that my town is one of the more friendlier towns so maybe thats why...I only get the strange looks and the giggles and likkle baby hiding behind their parents.

I went to play soccer with the kids in the evening but this time I never run up and down too hard. There was this little girl there who probably came with her parents and I saw she was giving me the "What is that thing" look... I wasnt paying her much mind but I noticed that anytime I walked anywhere close to her, she run guh behind har father, looking extremely terrified. These are the times when I wish I was back home and not scare anyone away by my appearance or blackness.

After soccer with the kids I went to another ALT gathering...It seem as if this is going to be a every Thursday thing because 2 of the ALTS leaving in August, so them trying to have as much fun as possible before they leave... I just realised that since I got to Japan, my eyes stop twitching. For a good year and a half or so my eyes would twitch which I think was stress related.. The twitches were really annoying...They are gone now.... :)

Blessings my friends

Day 63 - Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Day 63

At the school I go to today which is the main school, the teachers tell me what to do and some how try their best to include me in their lessons. I feel like a puppet at this school sometimes but I dont care....At this school, most of the teachers can speak very basic English and most of them understand it...However I have to use very simple wording and some times leave off many of my words...For example, instead of saying "I am going" it would be better to say "I going"... The "Am" can throw them off completely, well some of them that is....

A grade 1 teacher wanted the kids to play a game name karuta where they are in groups of 3. Some cards with fruits will be placed on the floor in each group and when I call the name of the fruit on the card, the person to touch the correct card first, gets it...This likkle yute in one of the groups only managed to get 1 card at the end of the game...And di likkle man started to cry....The Japanese teacher didnt even turn the white of her eye on him...

I went to the English Conversation thing today with the JET ALTs and the other ALT that work with my company... I showed them some pictures of Jamaica and my family and friends...So yes a couple of you reading this now, and know that I took your picture, I showed it to them...these people are going to have some Jazz party thing on Saturday as well as a eating out thing next Wednesday but I can attend neither of these as I am broke...I just realized that I wont be getting paid until June 2 because the pay day fall on a weekend...So I am going to have to use my flight money then take it back out of my pay...Can you believe not being paid in March, April and May???? 3 months...It sucks terribly...So I can now use a part of my flight money and attend this party and eat out thing as well BUT I am thinking that they must some how have something like this again later down when I am back up on my feet properly...So I think I will have to pass this time around..Oh and June 2 is the day that I am suppose to go and get my re entry permit as well as complete payment for my ticket...If I can some how squeeze in going to the German Embassy in Osaka, then I will try for that too... Bwoy tings rough pon mi yah now...I cannot get any day off to deal with these matters again before July 18 and I am supposed to leave for Germany on July 28 and guess what? The German embassy says it takes 3 days "OR more" to give you back the visa, depending on if you have all the documecants they need... Presently I dont have proof of my hotel information for Germany, nor do I have proof of my travel insurance...these things I started to pay for from in Jamaica, Do you see my predicament??? And I asked my company from last month... for a letter to show that I work for them, which is to be addressed to the German embassy....and all NOW them dont give me or say a word to me about it....But when they want something for you, they want it now and you have to give them.....And this is so strange...I got an email from them ASKING ME FOR MY PHONE NUMBER???? These people call me all the time what other numeber them asking for??? If I continue to talk about them I get more and more annoyed and upset... Well Bwoy is God alone mi a depend pon now....

Pray fi mi

God bless till later....

Day 62 - Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Day 62 [2 Months]

Yes my dear friends, today marks 2 months since I am on the honshu island in Nipon (Japan). This 2 months came a little faster than the initial 1 month. I am guessing that its because I am now starting to enjoy where I am some more, even though is country and it full a bush and mountains....My company also emailed me and asked me to write an article for the Niimi news paper, introducing myself.

I had a good day at work today, I tell you, work is so much fun, it makes tears come to my eyes...But man a wall... I think one the reasons why I get along well with the Japanese people, is because I love Japanese animation cartoons and video Games (most of which are created in Japan)...So any time I tell them that I used to watch Pokemon, Dragon Ballz, Naruto, Yugioh as well as play Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Mario and them games, they are shocked out of their wits....They never knew Jamaica had access to their games and their cartoons at all. Even when I tell them that Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki and Honda are popular cars in Jamaica, they are still in shock...As well as when I mention Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba...I guess thats the effect on a people, when they were once closed to the other parts of the world for over 200 years (1603 - 1854)...and many of them still have that withdrawl syndrome as well as a couple of them just dont like foreigners, nor the idea that foreigners are in their country, as much as their population is declining (having negative growth)... Its such a paradox that the Japanese people have the longest life expectancy over other races but at the same time has negative growth...The women dont want to have kids it seem...And many of them actually prefer the foreign guys, because in a general sense, the Japanese men are either shy or dont give a rats tail about the females...

I paid my water rate today, further depleting my available funds...then went to soccer practice with the guys my age group...Now I realise that I really suck at football when I am playing these guys...I think they also are figuring out that I am not yet at their level either... Most of these guys can kick the ball powerfully and accurately with both feet...I only use my right foot...
Now After doing some training exercises, we then decided to play a little match...After like 30 mins, my team was out of it....Extremely tired to say the least....the other team saw this and we got a whopping 7 - 0. Fortunately I stopped us from getting 8 by kicking out the ball in the last few seconds...This is one of the times I feel like I want Thursday to come so I can take revenge on the kids at football practise lol hence feeling a little better .... And after the match when my team was down and out and we were all sweating profusely and my nose running, feet and arms aching, extremely tired....I saw this guy from the other team, bend down doing Push ups ????? I should jus should just walk pass and accidentally step pon him finger dem...

After the football, 2 of the guys told me that they like Reggae music very much and even know sizzla... I was the one who was shocked now...One of them went further and started singing "I shot the sherif, but I didnt shot the deputy"....Now these guys can hardly talk English, but them singing Bob Marley songs...These guys dont drive any normal cars either...is peer lexus and harrier and some other big SUVs mi si dem a drive...Only me and this other guy had small cars..

Well inna di laterz

Day 61 - Monday, May 19, 2008

Day 61

On my way to work today I stopped and got some gas because the gas needle was touching the E... I am trying to avoid having to buy gas every single week because gas is expensive and this car ya dont seem too fuel efficient at all...as a matter of fact every single thing here in Japan is unbelievably expensive and small.... Can you imagine that 10 slices of bread cost about JA $215 / US $3 ??? Yes only 10 slices.... And I am just here counting the days until pay day because my pocket running madly towards E as well... And as sure as night follows day, I am going to Germany in July God's willing :) unnu pray fi mi...

I Had fun with all my classes today, but hey thats nothing new... I then went to bible study in the night and we did Luke 17:11 - 17 which speaks about Jesus healing the 10 men with leprosy and only one came back to give thanks... We got from it that, we should always give thanks in the good times and the bad times...Not run to Him only when things are not well but run to Him at all times, good and/or bad situations... Before the bible study started I ate some Phillipino food that my friend who is half white and half phillipino cooked...It was some soup business with beef in there and something tasting like Irish potato...It was a bit tangy but ok..

A Japanese lady that come to the bible study, printed a re entry permit form for me...Now thins printer that the bible study lady has is some wireless business... Its the fisrt time Im seeing it... No peripherials attached to the laptop and you can scan and print from it... I heard when the lady's husband bought it...The company created the part on the printer for him in a couple a days...Talk about the heights of technology....They are encouraging me to go to Germany even though its expensive and even though with that money for Germany I could visit, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore and maybe have change leave back... What a difficult choice to make :(

OOh and Melody, I have been holding up that peace sign in my pictures from high school days...I never knew Japanese did it as well...suh is not me following dem...Pure coincidence ... :)

Blessings people

Day 60 - Sunday, May 18, 2008

Day 60

Had to leave out at 8 am this morning with, another ALT working with my company and a JET ALT and we drove with the guy who I met on day 56 to go to another prefecture... It took us three hours to get there. We had to go through a prefecture name Tottori and then to our destination in Shimane - Ken (prefecture). Yes so K... I was near you, I didnt have your number thats why I never called...

We went to a shrine in an area of Shimane name Izumo... We were at the Izumo shrine place that they said will be closed until August and then wont be re-opened until 60 years time, because some god of theirs will be upset if it open in less than the 60 years????? So this means that hundreds and possibly thousands of people were at this thing and unnu muss know by now that I do not like Japanese crowds because I cannot deal wid the stare and laugh and point business...

After the shrine we then went to the Izumo Museum that has some ancient stuff from all 600 years ago, at least that what they said...It was very interesting though. They gave us a PSP (Play station Portable) to walk around with to hear the English version being explained to us...

When going home, this Japanese girl nearly drop off her bicycle when she saw me...and she of course had a shocked look on her face...
We got back home at about 8:30 pm so we sorta had over 12 hours on the road and at the place...

well until next blog...likkle more

Day 59 - Saturday, May 17, 2008

Day 59

Woke up by my friend's house then drove home and stayed in for the entire day... Watched some Naruto...Called my mom and a couple of other people using skype...My skype credit almost done now lol....

Today as I said I did nothing really, tomorrow should be a more exciting day though...I think this is gonna b my shortest blog thus far.. but any way blessings and take care

Day 58 - Friday, May 16, 2008

Day 58

The school I went to today, I have only been there 3 times... AND EVERY SINGLE TIME I MAKE A WRONG TURN...I kinda like teaching here because I have a lot of freedom...I basically do my own thing...But its still good at my main school because they all give me lesson plans and tell me what they want to do...I simply use this same lesson plan that I get from my main school, back at the other schools :)...I really enjoyed the classes today so I asked them if I can video tape it for next week...They said no problem...plus is the same exact thing that I did last week, I will do again ;) Isnt tha great!!! I taught the following today:

Grade 1 and 2
....
Dave sensei>>> What, colour, do you like.... (in a rhythmic way)
Children >>> What...colour...do you like...

I tell you its fun...not a dull moment, except when I am not teaching...

So today I went soccer practice up this mountain place near to where I live.... I dropped my ALT friend up there and he introduced me to th guys.... I then had to drop him down back and find my way up back the hill by myself.... needless to tell you that I got LOST going up, because there are just too many roads up this hill... any way I eventually found the place... This football training involved some big guys and werent so easy to salad and pile...Actually a couple of them seem way better than me to tell you the truth... My team lost 2:1 and I nearly get a goal and guh dash it weh :( ... but another guy on my team dash weh goal too so I dont feel bad... I had to drive behind one of the guys car to go down the hill because I dont want to get lost again...

So now its kind of official...My week in the evenings is now filled with activities after close to 2 months of being here...

Mondays at 8pm - Bible Study
Tuesdays at 7 pm - Soccer training
Wednesdays at 6:20 pm - English conversations
Thursdays at 6:00 pm - Soccer with the kids
Fridays at 7 pm - Soccer training

Saturday - Rest day for now
Sunday - Church and occasionally football match or travel to another prefecture

Thats pretty much how my days are looking now...I have the option of being busy or bored and I choose busy...

Exactly after the training, I went to yet another ALT link up ... ahh these things are so much fun..We played the apples game as well as this game name "lunch money" where a couple a people play and you can use the cards and attack people randomly...Its almost like a card game I used to play back at university name YUGIOH (only 2 people play at a time) except that this game many people can play at once...

well later for now...

Day 57 - Thursday, May 15, 2008

Day 57

The school for today was having a practice session for their Sports day which will be on June 1 (my sister's birthday). All the classes today involved me running up and down...Plus after lunch time, just before my last class, di pikney dem drag mi weh fi guh play dodge ball....I feel like a big kid but it was fun actually... :)

I went the football training ting with the under 12 and under 10 children and the coach guy...This time he placed me to train with the under 12s...Trust mi it seem as if the under 10s were better than them...Again I never business, shift, salad, pile and goal ;)....I feel evil...all one time this kid running toward me for the ball and mi sift him, and him slide off the court lol... Mi ago stop that now though...

Went to another ALT get together and ate, chat and played this board game name Catan..Its very interesting...Its this game where you have a city and you have to build it up and add roads and buildings etc... My first time playing it, I almost won the game but for some stroke of bad luck...I rolled two 7s in a row on the dice (How I dont know)... and if you have too many cards in ur hand and roll 7..you have to get rid off all except 4...I was so madd with the dice...

I bought some skype credit using my credit card and I called my mom and a friend of mine...So I can now put money on my credit card, buy skype credit and call people anywhere...for something like US $0.12 per minute on land lines and US$ 0.25 for cell phones...Which I think is extremely cheap...

Day 56 - Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Day 56

After work today, I went to an English Language meeting thing with 2 JET ALTs and another ALT that work with my company along with this Japanese man that can speak English, Spanish and of course Japanese...He drove us about 40 minutes away to this cabin looking place where we met up with this other Japanese girl that speaks some amount of English, as well as the lady that owned the cabin...All we did really was chat, drink coffee and played scrabble...the bredrin want to also invite us to this ancient temple place in another prefecture....finally it look like Im going to get out of this prefecture... I was telling the Japanese girl about the Universities we have in Jamaica....I told her that U.W.I is in a couple Caribbean islands, so I mentioned that one is in Barbados, the girl then asked WHERE??? BARBECUE??? where is that???, Show me Barbecue....ahha bwoy...The man said its the first time he was hearing about Barbados as well...

The ALTs told me that they went to this mineral bath ting in this place name Tojo...They said I should go down there one day... I thought to my self that "hey I cant leave Japan without going to one of those hot spring tings" Suh I told them that hey I would really love to go....But then after that they told me You have to first take a bath then get butt naked with some other Japanese men in the same hot spring ting..... DEN MI SEH, "UNNU MUS MADDDD"...They of course started laughing at me and said they too were a little scared of doing it at first but then afterwards they got used to it....First ting, all a dem white then when me the loan black man step in the pool and hevery body start staring mi down....plus a pool a naked MAN???, YUH MADDD!!!! the only good thing is that Japanese men are homophobic, but not like we...Sorry dem would have to give me a place by my self...

So the Japanese high school girls wear these ridiculously short skirts to school. I heard its against the rules but the school authorities dont enforce them ( I wonder why)... So many times in the morning you driving to school and these high school girls walking pass in dem short skirt and all you have to say is aaah bwoy ....well not that I'm complaining, sorry I mean yes I am complaining ... Its just terrible and wrong...Why dont they enforce the rules??? lol...

Later people...

Day 55 - Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Day 55

When I got to the school for today, I was greeted by several jubilant kids saying "Dave sensei, Dave sensei"...and teachers with smiling faces....I was like wow, are people this happy to see me? Well this was maybe because they haven't seen me for 2 weeks due to the golden week business last week and the holiday the Tuesday b4 that... Hey I would be happy to see me too lol...The administrator was teaching me some new Japanese words and they were amazed by my Japanese vocabulary thus far and clapping mi every now and then.... Today at the school they were having some Rice harvest ceremony right in front of the school with some of the children involved as well as the principal (why am I not surprised about the principal??)...Its a ceremony that they perform while they play the tyco drums...

Went home as school was over then ate....shortly after that some people from my car company came to hand me a document for my car....when the lady saw me she was so shocked that she took about 5 steps back instantly and unconsciously when I opened my door.... she saw the very disappointed look on my face then she tried playing it off as if she was ok....Boy the stigma of being black in Japan....shortly after this I jumped straight into my bed...Only to be awaken by a phone call from my mom...didnt I tell you on day 53 that as soon as shi hear mi talk bout her shi going to call??? Yeah thats my mom for you...Probably the only person in the world right now I would give my life for....

Derri mi know mi slow but what yuh mean by "regular chameleon" I am being honest that I have no idea what this means...

Luciana, mi know yuh wouldn't recognize mi from yesterdays photo lol

Royalty...Thanks for the constant encouragement and contact

Day 54 - Monday, May 12, 2008

Day 54

So normally at the main school that I teach at, the teachers would give me their lesson plans before, to tell me what I am expected to do at their classes...The usual thing and what the company I work for said, is that we should get the lesson plans at least a day or two before teaching their classes, so as to have adequate time to prepare for it...This lady at the school came to me exactly 1 second before the class start, rushing and breathing heavily to try and explain what is expected of me...Remember dem dont speak English too tuff...Mi jus look pon har and kept saying Hai hai, so so so so....In other words "YEAH man anyting yuh seh"....

I posted a letter today to softbank for them to take their internet fee from my postal account...Until then I have 2 months free so Im not supposed to pay until about July or August I think...I also checked my postal account to see if my company put the money they owe me from the loan in my account yet, and all now it nuh reach...But yet every couple a days you getting letter or calls from them talking bout them want this and that...I tell you, there are just too many horror stories about this company....

I went to bible study tonight back at the lady' house, same lady sitting in the pic from yesterday...As usual it went pretty well...We are looking at the book of Luke and we are now at chapter 17:1 -10....Talking about forgiveness and faith...and how we should forgive our brothers and sisters as well as trust/ believe / have faith in God...My friend from the bible study who is leaving in August to go back to Arizona, gave me some winter wear as well as some blankets and stuff...Mi a prepare fi winter from now... Hey, this guy applied for a job in Tokyo and got a letter from them saying basically that "bwoy yuh nuh get di job boss"....So he said he felt a little down but eventually forgot about it....only to see another letter from them...He was wondering "what dis fah now??" Then the letter started off with about a paragraph or 2 apologizing profusely about mistakingly sending the initial letter to him...So he was like "WOW it look like mi get di job" then when him read further down, the people dem basically apologizing for leaving a "R" out of his name then the rest of the letter was the same as the last one lol.... Bwoy dem Japanese yah serious...
Went to bed about 2:00 am in the morning because I was online chatting to bout 10 people at once...

I was featured in a newspaper along with some other new teachers at different schools..Hey can you recognize me?????? Very difficult to locate right??? Unnu nuh si how mi blend right in....

Day 53 - Sunday, May 11, 2008

Day 53

Went to bed at about 5 am Sunday morning because I was checking a backlog of emails from I installed the internet on Saturday...So I was on the internet roughly for about 10 hours...And I had to wake up at about 9 am (4 hours sleep) to go to church (first time since March 9). I met the lady who keeps the bible study at a store name Deo Deo, then they dropped me to someone's home where they keep church...It was only about10 of us attending the service, thats actually the regular attendance, about 8 - 10....The service was ok except that is peer Japanese dem talk and the bible study lady had to be translating stuff for me. We ate food afterwards and chatted, again the bible study lady had to be traslating their jokes because I only hear peer laughing. And when I said something, the bible study lady had to translate it for them....they even gave me food to carry home, bwoy thank God cause di house start a get emptier and emptier as it draws closer and closer to May 31, pay day....The bible study lady also gave me some well needed blankets because me and dem know dat December - February (Winter) naaah guh pretty. We took some pictures after church then I went home. Hey, and I am in suit because they didn't warn me that this was supposed to be a casual thing.....

Chatted with a couple people online and called my mother for Mother`s day boy I miss her to the bottom of mi heart...not only her but the cooking as well ;)...Mom I know u dont get to read mi blog but mi love yuh bad bad and miss you too....Pinky read mi blog though suh tell her for mi pinky :) (I know as soon as shi hear shi going to call mi). :) Hey, mi madda nuh easy yuh know, bout shi love the idea when she tell her friends that "hey, my son is in Japan!!"...a weh shi hear bout???

I was talking to a Jamaian that lives about 2 hours away from me and mi hear some ting bout 11 people got murdered in one day??? Is what going on in Jamaica...can somebody tell me please!!! and something bout murder total reach 500 hundred...bwoy dem stories yah mek mi dread...But I still have to go back....all if dem start drop bomb mi still a guh back a mi yard...Bwoy it would be chaos on earth if Jamaicans ever figure out how to mek missiles and nuclear bombs...

Day 52 - Saturday, May 10, 2008

Day 52

Rain fell for the entire day today from morning till night, so I did absolutely nothing..well except for going to the coffee/drink dispenser (which are everywhere in japan, at least every 1 minute by foot u will see a different one) and get a coffee then come back to my apartment...and guess what??? I finally got my internet today!!!! Horayyy...It took me about 1 hour to set up the stuff, (because is peer Japanese) then I was good to go. I checked a back log of mails for the entire day as well as chat to a couple friends, all now i still dont clear my back log...So I guess its goodbye to the slow internet place for now it seem...worse the lady that was questioning me on Day 50 in the internet place taught I come from AFRICA....And this other lady asking mi if Jamaica is very close to South Africa because this white girl come from South Africa....Bwoy...mi a tell yuh...

Well thats all for today folkes...later

Day 51 - Friday, May 9, 2008

Day 51

Went to my furthest school today and had three classes. It takes 45 minutes of none stop driving to get to this school on some serious small, winding roads. After my 3 classes I had nothing to do and was almost falling asleep at my desk, so I went outside and watched the kids do P.E. I eventally started to kick the football and some students joined me. After kicking the ball with the students and feeling sorry for myslef being this big gray man kicking ball with the kids, a who dat mi si fly pass mi a play hide and seek wid di pikney dem??? Nuh di Principal?? I could not believe my eyes...The principal was speeding down the corridor running after the kids playing hide and seek as well as hit and run...Aaah bwoy...Even after I was leaving to go home, the principal was very much into the games with the kids..I ofcourse stopped feeling bad instantly...Is this even slightly possible in Jamaica??? Or anywhere else as a matter of fact???

After going home and resting a bit, I went to another ALT get together where about 8 of us met together at another ALTs place...again we chatted, ate and played this game name Apples to Apples...It is very American but quite interesting...One of the females from America, decided to get up in the middle of the game and then slipped and fell on the floor heavily...She spilled wine on the floor and got some of the cards wet with the wine...I heard she has a tendency to fall in every apartment she go into...I know she dont know about my blog so here she is......And even if she find out then big deal ;) (Am I evil or what)....A couple of the other ALTs decided to go to karaoke about 1:30 am in the morning but this was all the younger ALTs it seem...The older ALTs (myself included) thought we were just too tired to go any where else. Bwoyyy mi a get old...

Michelle and Royalty...From the picture on the blog ysterday, we were playing a game where the kids should guess which month I handed to the teacher... The teacher would give them a hint in Japanese and then they would say the month in English...
Laterz.

Day 50 - Thursday, May 8, 2008

Day 50

Yes my half century day...Only about 3 century days and 13 left :)...Royalty, you said that most often than not people would prefer to remain in Japan, well thats not totally true...most of the Jamaicans here, especially the females want to go back home...is only their situation at home keep them in Japan...Bwoy I dont know if is something wrong with me or what but mi want come back a mi yard...and then again, my heart is with Jamaica, probably no matter what goes on there, thats probably where I want to be my home for all time. I would love to travel the world but then go right back to Jamaica. My dream job is to probably work in Jamaica as a consultant to a multinational corporation that would allow me to travel to different countries every now and again then go back home to Jamaica.

So today a teacher told me not to play any more games with points in his class, because the students who lose, take it very very hard...On the other hand, the winners are quite elated. But isnt that normal??? Any way I will take his advice, and really and truly, I dont like to see the sad look on their faces when they lose. :(

When I went to check the internet today, I saw a Japanaese lady sitting near where I was supposed to go...and I said "Konnichiwa" she answered and then asked "Do you speak Japanese?" so I said, "Nihongo skushi" (Stewart Panton, quit laughing because you know Im not too down with the spelling yet ok) meaning I speak very little Japanese...She then started to ask me a barrage a question like which schools I teach at and why did I choose Japan and a bag a ray ray. Almost every single Japanese I meet asking me the same set of questions...and one of the major one is, "Why did I choose Japan?" Well I guess the opportunity presented itself so I took it...Plus I wanted to experience the eastern culture, plus I wanted to get paid while not being too stressed with my Job in Jamaica and this was one of the options available...If I could get the same pay like Im getting now, back in Jamaica...MAYBE I would not have been here, just maybe...

So after the lady finish quiz mi and I dashed out of the internet place (As you might have noticed on yesterday`s blog) because I was to attend a football training thing and the guy was already at my apartment....I called him and tell him seh mi not home yet and Im at the internet place...He then said I should stay there and he will come and pick me up...I said "no boss me need fi change out of mi jacket and tie.....Now this bredda speak English scarcely but he understands it well enough, or so I think...So mi drive out of the place flying in the likkle car...this old lady now nearly mek mi lik har dung cause she ride out inna di miggle a di road wid out even looking...A good ting mi have quick response...Mi seh when the old lady jump off the bicycle and hold it den shi a laugh???? So I changed in like 5 minutes and called the guy to come and pick me up...He came there in 10 minutes...So after he drove off, he asked me if I had indoor shoes, so I said yes...I told him that I would run and get them..So he said "ok ok"...As I opened the door and ready to step out, nuh the man that drive off and nearly mek mi drop out a di car....He then said " no no sorry I take you there" so all this while yuh mean the man neva understan what mi mean by I am going to get the shoes??? Mi a tell yuh bwoy...

So we were at the training wid one bag a likkle pikney. I was like aah bwoy, this not going to test mi skills at all...So there is one team with the under 12 kids, playing by themselves and di bredda tell mi to guh on a team wid di under 10 pikney dem???? Suh mi seh all right den boss, cause at least this is better than sitting in my apartment playing games or watching DVD. So I was playing football against some under 10s but then one big man came on with one of the teams, so I started to feel a little better...Over all I ended up looking like this big star, shifing, piling and salading the likkle kids on the field and scoring multiple goals...I neva care, is di bredda put mi on them team so I had no mercy on the opponents :) all the big man that was on the other team wasnt speared...salad, pile and goal...after taking off every other team I was extremely tired and the team with the big man, when they came back, they finally took off my team...

So after this so called "training session" I met up with the other ALTS at a restaurant where we chatted and ate...I then went home and borrowed some more PS2 games from the ALT on my apartment complex...At least I have some more stuff now to occupy my time...I also started watching the Japanese animation Naruto now... :) Hey so what, I`m a big kid :)

Well blessings until later...

Day 49 - Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Day 49

Ok anonymous author from yesterdays blog, you are still anonymous...
Royalty, you are also anonymous. Please to identify yourselves lol...
Donnalee I did not get drunk on Sunday. Maybe if I had one more beer though :)
Luciana you are right about the sight seeing business in another country if the Germany thing dont work out.

So today most teachers asked me what I did for golden week; so I told them everything. When I got home, I slept for about 2 hours then a call from a Jamaican friend in another prefecture woke me up. She told me that maybe she have to move to another location. We spoke for close to 2 hours...Its always good to hear another Jamaicans voice on the other side of the phone, trust mi (hint hint) lol...Well im supposed to go football training now so mi gone....di man tell mi 6:00 and him deh a mi yard 5:45...and a call mi...Bwoy oh bwoy dem nuh know jamaican yet...later people...

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Day 48 - Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Day 48

Yes today is the end of the golden week, the last day of holiday for now and is known as "Substitute" holiday...well thats what I see on my cell phone, I have no clue what it means, this teacher told me something about plus alpha...Anyway, so I called one of my friend`s who is in another prefecture and she said our company is giving her a raw deal. She was supposed to go home this year but because of some technicalities, she still has to be here for some weird reason unknown to me. She also told me that our company sort of have a reputation of not caring too much about their employees but instead is simply protecting its image and trying to get more clients...

So scenarios like this might be possible:

Possible Scenario 1

Employee: ... Hello there is a traffic pile up on the road going to work today

Company: ... Ok make sure you still get to work on time
(How, by teleportation???)

Possible Scenario 2

Employee: ... Hello I have a minor accident on the road this morning
Company: ... Ok take a taxi and make sure you have enough money to get to work

I heard that sometime they will not even ask you if you are ok...But again, everybody have a different experience.

I hoping that no foolishness comes my way, or else I might just have to run come home a mi yard and nuh business. So far it has been ok for me except when I am having my down times, which comes scarcely.... My friend had a little mishap and she said the company didnt even care to give her a call...The only calls she kept getting from them is to say she need to pay more and more money... Boy is peer bad news mi hearing...Even from my friend who resigned...He said that they messed him up big time...Boy I hope I just finish the year and run come home...Not anada day after mi contract end, God`s willing...Although everybody have a different experience still but so far its mostly negative stuff I am hearing from others...

I got a call from the yahoo BB people to ask me if I need internet only or internet and phone....Even though I dont read Japanese very well, I am certain I ticked the correct box (Internet only) so if I see them coming to install phone in my apartment, I might have to tell them to take away themselves...

I spoke to my mom and sister again today..I asked my sister to seek out some ticket prices through her workplace, because I am seriously contemplating to take a visit home in August, but I am watching how things will go first...

Day 47 - Monday, May 5, 2008

Day 47

Ok the worst thing just happend to me...I completed writing the blog and after highlighting it I accidentally pressed delete...No undoing could get it back ...sigh tsk tsk tsk...this is my re attempt...

So I woke up today at about 8 am after going to bed at about 10 pm last night because of the mass eating and drinking the night before. Today is known as "Children`s day" which is coming to the closure of golden week. Tomorrow is the final day. This years golden week as I was telling Stewart online today, not too golden though (more like bronzden) because 2 of the public holidays fell on the weekend. I went to the my city hotel later on to use the internet on my laptop then went back home to end Kingdom Hearts 2, that I have been playing since I moved into my apartment. At 7 pm I went to joyful with the other persons to host bible study where we looked at Genesis 1:20 - 2:4. This was after sharing with them from the daily bread devotional on Isaiah`s commissioning and how he said "here am I Lord send me"... I then went to my friend`s apartment to check the internet again...

I forgot to mention that some time ago, I met this guy at the place where I normally check internet every day, who seem to be crippled. at the time he was trying very hard to communicate with me but of course it was difficult because I can hardly speak Japanese and him can hardly speak English. Any way... One day while I was in my apartment, I heard my door bell...Only to see this man at my apartment door...How did he find my apartment???? Your guess is as good as mine...He again was trying to speak to me and then gave me a paper
re-introducing himself and then gave me some other papers with some Jehoviah witnesses business...He was also trying to sell me one of the watch tower books it seem but I told him seh "boss mi nuh really undestan weh yuh a seh so have a nice day" he then left after 20 minutes of trying to communicate with me...Now on Saturday (Day 45) I again heard my door bell...I wondered who this could be, as all the ALTs in the area should have my number and they would call before coming...It was none other than this man again...I was a bit annoyed because clearly this man don`t realise that I scarcely understand Japanese very well, nor does he understand English, or if he does, he can`t speak it properly for me to understand him.. So I told him that I was very very busy...He still insisted on giving me this other paper about Jehoviah Witnesses then I told him "thank you very much and have a blessed day"....I dont know what I`m going to tell him, if he appears again....

To Luciana, yes my mind run on you too :)

To Richard, I have no idea what you mean by it dont sound right from me when I said cute little girl ... Dont you know I love children :) ...You dont love them too ?? ;)
And re the picture from yesterday...thats a picture I took in Atlanta...thats not the Benz that took me to the restaurant, it look like it though...just that it black...So all now I dont trim yet..It cost equivalent to Jamaican $2100 to get a hair cut.. (YUH MADDD) that could trim mi 4 times in Jamaica...Hey hey is not cheap mi cheap, but the first 2 months with this company is starvation period...We wont get our first pay until May month end...So I have to watch what I do with the little I have now, and use it very wisely...

To Derriann, there is no way I would be able to find out what it would be like if I was a girl in Japan....however, the Jamaican girls who I have met thus far, and have been here for a year and more (with this company I work for)...is not giving me an absolutely positive feed back. For one...Japanese SEEM to be kinda sexist and SEEM very male dominant...So you have many nights at the bar with the guys just chatting all manner of none sense...the only females there is the ones serving the drink and the food. So far I have only heard 1 single Jamaican girl saying that they kinda like it here...she has been here for 6 years I think. A part from she, I am yet to hear a very positive feedback from a Jamaican female here...tomorrow I will share in more detail what one of them told me....

In our case though in my area...the female ALTs are there with us as well and occationally the Japanese guys might carry their girl friends...The female Japanese culture kinda different I was told. I heard that there are girls who look out for foreigners to get with them...and as long as you speak English, you are good to go...BUT, they say that these girls really using the guys...so instead of the man using the girl...its the other way around...and they show off about how many foreigners they have been with etc etc.

Well take care now and later all

Day 46 - Sunday, May 4, 2008

Day 46

So yesterday was Constitution day and today is Greenery day. The guy who I met on Friday (Day 44) at the bar place with my ALT friends, came for me this morning at about 8 am. While I was in the vehicle and the other Japanese people were there questioning mi bout Jamaica and stuff, I swear that not even for a second did the smile came of the driver's face for the 1 hour journey...

We watched a couple football matches that were played by some kids. Its actually the second half of an elementary school competition thing (ages 11 and 12 supposedly) . Yesterday was the first half. Our team is the Niimi football club or something of the sort. Other adjoining prefectures are a part of the competition as well. Our team is already in the quarter finals... I participated in training with the kids and the other coaching staff before the game began... I realised that i havent touched a football for about 8 months to a year and that I was ridicously out of shape...It took me about an hour though to get back my form ;)... I did some juggling and went to a maximum of 65 and my feet started to hurt...I not going to mek Japan get me out of shape innuh....In Jamaica it was worst because is only about 4 times for the year I would get to play foot ball if so much...They now are inviting me to the training sessions which is just great for me I think :).... There was this little cute 7 year old girl who was actually juggling the football with the other kids. I could not believe how hard this baby could kick the ball and how long she kept the ball in the air for... Our team played 3 matches...They drew the first one, won the second one 4 - 1 and went to the finals and lost on penalty...The other team which was from aother Prefecture name Shemane - Ken, won...they were obviously better than our team because the ball was in our half for most of the game...However we prevented them from scoring...

They told me to shout Niimi Gambare during te match which is saying something like, go Niimi go Niini go...Of course I had to create a rhythm with the Niimi Gambare business :) The kids on the bench were shouting it with me as well...And the other coaches were laughing...One time I saw our goal keeper (name Kanta) coming out too far and I said "Kanta, guh back inna di goal!!" The guy who invited me nearly died with laughter, along with this other coach guy who spoke a little English... The kids there all wanted to touch my hair because of course dem neva see a black man yet.

After we lost the match we went home and they came back for me at about 6pm. The guy came with his friends in a very expensive looking Mercedes benz and we went to a restaurant place where we sat around a table with a oven thing on it...The staff would then carry some raw food and we would put them on the oven thing with fire and cook/barbecue it ourselves...I of course participated in the barbecue exercise and dip the food in some barbecue sauce..It was LOVELY, WONDERFUL (SUBARASHI) I tell you!!...I ate beef and pork...too much I think...They also gave me 2 big glasses of beer and some Japanese wisky...I dont have a clue why I drank off all of this stuff ;( . When I was leaving I was sooooo full and soo dizzy... that when I got home I dropped on the bed...I have never been this intoxicated in my entire life and I promise you that this will NEVER happen again. The food though was very tasty I must admit :)... Its the nicest food I have ever had since coming to Japan, and hey, I helped to prepare it ;-)... My mom called me when I got home...and I told her everything and she could not stop laughing because I do not go near the kitchen when I am in Jamaica lol...

One of the guys who was there with us in the restaurant had some reggae music on his phone.. I was shocked!!!..He had this song about "ring ding ding ding di di ding ding...ring ding ding ding di di ding ding daaaaaa ding ding ding daaaaa" some ting lik crazy frog i think it did name...Dont know if any of u remember it or know it... I use to hear it on the radio whole heap about 2 or 3 years ago.
So today was actually one of my better days in Japan (except for getting tipsy) after being very very down for he past 2 days...I am feeling much better now though...I must say the last 2 days were excrushiatingly tough but the Lord is here with me and its Him I am holding on to...I also believe that I must go through this very tough experience, for me to become a better person overall.

Blessings and peace to you all.

Day 44 - Friday, May 2, 2008

Day 44

Made a wrong turn today (which is of course not unfamiliar to me with my directionally challengeness syndrome) to go to this school. I found back my way very quickly though and got to the school quite early. I taught three (3) classes but this school dont give mi any lesson plans. Luckily most of the stuff that they wanted me to do is what I already did at the other schools, so no problem at all. I spoke to my friend Royalee today and by the way Royalee, I dont see any emails from yuh, except this forward bout some scrabble business. Bwoy me and all these calls to Jamaica, mi phone bill ago high, when it come mi will tell unnu how much it come up to... And Sasha I dont remember what the Jamaican girl from Mandeville name at all. I think I forgot all of their names which is sad...Only about 4 name I actually remember. The thing is because we dont get to talk on a regular basis. I guess every body has their thing to deal with.
I played this guitar game on X-box 360 with some of the other ALTs and then we went to this bar place to chat and eat; which was the final send off meeting for our friend who resigned. Met this Japanese guy who the other ALTs introduced me to, who they say is very influential. I told him that I play football and because of that he invited me to a match which will be on Sunday. He said he is a football coach. the other Alts said I should go because he really help out all the ALTs that are here, and even occationally attended past ALts weddings in their respective countries when they get married.

Today I was extremely down and depressed, but thats life sometimes. My mom called me out of the blue though and we spoke for a while.

Well peace and love my friends...

Day 43 - Thursday, May 1, 2008

Day 43

Yes the first day of May...Its very sad but mi actually counting down the days till mi go back home wid all the foolishness that is going on there. But dont get mi wrong still, Japan is ok, but no where like home. I was driving to the school today that I think I enjoy being at the most and on my way a saw a monkey (first time in my life) at the side of the road looking on...And bwoy it faiva Sheldon lol a joke...A good ting sheldon nuh read mi blog but mi know Panton going to tell him. I almost got to school late because I called one of my friend`s from my former workplace, Garmex and she had me on the phone for about 12 minutes. Bwoyme and dis month`s phone bill, mi nuh know how it ago guh. All who mi call betta western union some money back to mi :) .

I found out what the kids at this school wanted me to say the first time I taught here...the were trying to get me to repeat "hipa hipa hi i shi ke ru" which means I love you very much, now isnt that tweet :)...These kids in their break time ride this uni cycle ting...And I said to myself...If dem pikney here can do this, den me mus can do it to...One time mi guh try it and mi nearly drop off mi jus seh noooo noo boss, this is not a part of my contract. But then again???

while I was driving back from school I saw a small dead snake in the road, I never know seh snake deh roun di place. I got a call today from the guy who installed the pre internet stuff in my apartment and he said I could go ahead and send in the Application to Yahoo BB at a store name Deo Deo. Some of the JET guys around here have some 5ombs connection and them paying a very small fee for it and me mussy only going to get 20mbs and a pay more...Suh it guh still. Plus me not getting this internet until about another 3 weeks or so...I then went to my friends apartment and check the internet, which is why a couple of you may have seen me only this morning.

So now I get this letter from my company saying that I need to pay my rent to some account...when me done pay mi rent already, is what dem really up to??? Every now and again when I`m driving to work and sometimes while driving back, I see this JET ALT riding to school, so I would honk the car horn to hail him...Mi hear seh the guy a tell him fren dem how mi a frighten him students them off them bicycle wid mi honking because dem not expecting to hear the horn...And mi did notice that when mi honk mi horn the last time him not even pay mi nuh mind innuh and mi was wondering why... the guys who told me laughed me to scorn and said when him dont wave I should just do a hand break turn and honk until him wave lol.

Well I not going to make these people run mi out again so later...

Day 42 - Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Day 42

When I got up this morning, three of my friends from Jamaica were buzzing around in my mind. So guess what? I gave the three of them a call :)...So I called Michelle, Royalee and Raquel.. I know for sure that Royalee and Raquel are doing exams,...Not so sure about Michelle. I got through to Michelle and Raquel (who was very busy studying, as it is her final year) but Royalee phone waah dash weh or shi did lock it off or something; Maybe she busy studying as well because its her final year too. Bwoy I dont want to see my next phone bill...My Jamaican friend who I met last week in Okayama, run up him phone bill a call him wife back in Jamaica...I wont say how much it guh up to but it nuff...Dem cut off him phone and him did haffi beg someone to buy one other phone for him that is pre-paid (sorry fi a scandal yuh suh mi fren but yuh done know)...A good ting him nuh know bout di blog yet lol....The problem is that, when him leaving Japan, him going to have to pay back every cent him owe the people dem.

I went to buy my groceries today and also went to Joyful (the ALTs who dont like to cook or who cant cook, paradise) and even though some kids were there and I shocked a few of them (almost everyday I shock somebody new), it was ok. The shock comes in different ways. One time you will get the second stare with that mouth wide open look. Another time you will get just that blank stare for a couple a seconds, and when you say hi to them is like they snap out of the trance. Most of them will say hi back, but a few times they dont even pay yuh nuh mind. Another thing is the, "hey look there is a black guy, WOW!! I cant believe my eyes" kinda look where they touch either their parents or their friends and point at you. And the friend/parent will give you either the trance stare or the second stare...Am I ever going to get used to this?? Well early days yet I guess. The town has only about 30,000 - 40,000 persons I hear, which is probably the same amount of persons in my community back in Jamaica, the infamous WATERFORD (weh di Waterford massive dem deh, blap blap, hail up Vybez Kartel lol)... Of course by now unnu muss realise that some screws need to tighten up my head right :) Hey to think about it...I remember that sometime in about 1999 my mother had to run off Vybez Kartel and some of his cronies off my roof top because they were bursting clappers and fire crakers up there... Yes what was I saying again? Oh yes, 30,000 - 40,000 persons in Niimi but the area is very very big, probably as big as St. Catherine and Clarendon combined.

I faxed off my worksheet today because its the last day of the month. If I dont fax off this thing, then I wont get paid. Each day I have to get a stamp from one of the teachers at the school I go to on that day. Some people wait until late to get all the stamps at the different schools but this is dangerous...because if you cant find anybody to stamp it one day...den yuh salt and you will be paid late. One of the ALTs said our contract is very similar to the man dem weh fix the photocopy machine and the AC and dem ting deh. Is just that we are English teachers.
I also got my letter from golloyds today, to say I am now registered. This is the place that can allow me to wire money back home, because mi have to pay off back mi car loan else RBTT going to come a mi yard in Waterford wid police, fi tek weh mi car, and dat cyaaah work. Ok mi a tell unnu too much of mi business now lol... inna di laterz.
