Day 254 { Stupid Cell Phone } - Friday, November 28, 2008

Day 254 { Stupid Cell Phone }

So the stupid cell phone that my company forced on us is dying quickly. The charge is only lasting for 1 day only then it suddenly die on me while im at work it seem. It has only 3 bars... By the time it gets to bar 2, its as good as dead.

Went to my other Friday School today and I now realise why they gave me these schools every other Friday... Its because when snow falls, these 2 schools are the most dangerous to go to... The teachers here told me that its possible that this school is worst than the one last week, where snow is concerned. Such a sad story I tell you.

I called my pastor in Jamaica today and we talked for a little while. I forgot that I had a class to teach and a kid came up to me while I was on the phone speaking to my pastor, to tell me that its class time now. After work I went to English conversation then home.

Day 253 { Falling Asleep / Thanksgiving Dinner } - Thursday, November 27, 2008

Day 253 { Falling Asleep / Thanksgiving Dinner }

After lunch at work today, I was seriously falling asleep. What made it even worst is that I was super tired from yesterday BUT I still have to behave as if all is well... At one point, I could hardly hold myself together and I think I almost hit my head on a teacher's arm beside me, while I was falling asleep. I had to do something, so I got up and went to the bathroom shortly afterwards.

After work, I quickly drove to my hair salon owner friend to get a haircut. I forgot that I already made arrangements for this, and accidentally told my company to inform the gas company to come and collect their money at 5pm... So I rushed to the salon, got a haircut BUT they were giving me cake and all manner of things even though I told them I was in a hurry. So I hurried back after my haircut to try to catch the gas people but alas, there was this slow moving vehicle infront of me for miles, and I could not overtake him. So I missed the gas persons by about 10 minutes. I called them though and they came shortly afterwards.

My ALT friends were having a thanksgiving eat out night at a restaurant near to my apartment. Initially I said I wasn't going to go but I ended up going anyway. Again I had too much food... I finally met the new ALT girl in the area... There is no way we would recoginse her, because she is Japanese in terms of race but born and raised in the USA. She confuse many of the Japanese people around here, because people would come up to her speaking Japanese and she hardly even understands the language. After dinner at this restaurant, we then went to karaoke in the rain.

My friend Dudu, I have not seen you online for about a year now whats up? I tried calling Luma twice but her phone wasn't picking up. Glad to know you are ok bro and thanks for the encourangement..Peace...

Day 252 { More Car Trouble } - Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Day 252 { More Car Trouble }

Got a call from my high School class mate this morning who was attempting to speak French to me. Gregory, your voice hasn't changed one bit since high school, so I don't know what you were trying. While I was on the phone talking, my car was over heating AGAIN!!! Oh good Lord. So I had to stop for a while, then head to a gas station. The gas attendant guy then pulled off the radiator cap and used a hose to spray water inside, along with some stop leak liquid. I saw my land lord drove by so I called him and he came. This brother was even willing to drop me to work... I then asked him if he isn't going to collect his rent....All he did was laugh.

I was running a little late so I called the school and the vice principal answered the phone... I was trying to explain to him that I am running late because I had some car trouble and I stopped at the gas station to ask for help... He interpreted what I said as "I am having car trouble please come and help me" ... So while I was on my way to the school, it was the vice principal blowing his horn, signalling me on the opposite side of the road... He looked at the car and inspected it, then asked me if it was ok now... So I told him that I think so... We then drove to the school... I explained the situation to one of the ladies at the school, who speaks a little English... And she started laughing at the vice principal... He also started laughing at himself...

After work, I picked up my other Jamaican friend Courtney at the Niimi train station. We had a meeting at the place where I used to check the internet when I just came to Niimi. Maybe about 8 of us were at this meeting, the Niimi folkes along with some others from a nearby town name Takahashi...We discussed some company stuff, learned some new games to play with the children then that was it...It seem as if every single ALT that drive in Niimi is having some sort of car trouble...Well except the main ALT. She even warned us to stay away from the company that we bought the car from... I can't believe that I was still trusting them after all this time...

After the meeting I was wondering if I should go to the Wednesday English conversation, or go to Joyful with the other ALTs... My phone was dead so I couldn't call anyone... I told the other guys that I would come to joyful, but when I drove around to meet Hiroshi who would take us to English conversation, he was there waiting and looking a little dissappointed... So I decided to go to the English conversation...I couldnt contact the other guys to tell them I cant make it to joyful, because my phone was dead. When I finally got home, I was super tired...

Melony thanks for the encouragement...
Hey Kesha, didnt you get that email saying that they will help us out with paying for tyres??? Thank you for the encouragement also...

Day 251 { Rude Kids Get Quiet / More Ekaiwa } - Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Day 251 { Rude Kids Get Quiet / More Ekaiwa }

So the place stopped getting dark at 5:30 pm. It is getting dark at 5:00 pm now...

For the first time a part for the very first lesson I had with this grade 6 class, the boys actually behaved... This was because the Kyoto Sensei (vice principal) was also in the room. The teacher also strategically mixed the boys and the girls together and they actually participated... I am indeed impressed. I hope they behave next week as well when the Junior high school teachers come to observe me...

I went to another ekaiwa today at the Niimi College for nurses... It was loads of fun... I was telling them some of my stories and they were dying with laughter. Plus there is the added benefit of looking at the cute Japanese girls BUT BUT friends thats not my my my major reason for going there ... It is to help with English ok!!! .... Honestly

Van thanks for your advice but I have no clue where to find a place in my area with just snow and no poles and no cars... Even if I did find one...As Richard said, I am too much of a coward to go try that out... I will try skiing maybe but no donut, 360 not 180 degree business in my car... A slight 20 or 30 degrees is ok enough...

Day 250 { Kinro Kansha No Hi) } - Monday, November 24, 2008

Day 250 { Kinro Kansha No Hi) }

Today was another holiday in Japan known as Kinro Kansha No Hi or Labour Thanksgiving Day.
This national holiday was established in 1948 as an occasion for praising labour, celebrating production and giving one another thanks. Prior to the establishment of this holiday, this day was celebrated as an imperial harvest festival called Niiname-sai (新嘗祭). Actually the holiday should have been yesterday, but I think because it was Sunday, they changed the day.

So yes rain fell all day today and all I did was to stay in my apartment. I brain stormed the theme for my radio show...And it should be .... "Dave と いっしょに (to ishoni) Fun, Entertainment and Learning." Which really means fun, education and learning with Dave. Again, if you visit camnet.jp/radio and scroll down near to the end of the page, you will see that my program will be coming soon.

Peace, love and blessings everyone.

Day 249 { Radio Show Meeting / Problematic Car } - Sunday, November 23, 2008

Day 249 { Radio Show Meeting / Problematic Car }

I was rushing to Okayama city this morning for the radio show meeting, when low and behold, my car could not start. The battery light was also blinking... I was like... "Oh my Good Lord, why at this time???" So I had to call my friend who was more than willing to drop me at the train station, thank God for friends like those. So I bought the ticket then waited for the train at this station, which was different from the one I normally go to. So the people around this side probably never seen me before. Of course there were the never ending stares of surprise and wonder that I am still trying to get used to.

I then went to Okayama city, but the train stopped at some odd looking area that I wasn't used to. So what I did was simply followed the crowd and pretended as if I knew where I was going. The area started to look stranger and stranger and I was lost for about 7 minutes... I then saw a door that looked a little familiar. I went through it and walla!!! I was out in Okayama city via the basement. I then ran to go meet my friend Takako who was extremely busy, because she had some sort of meeting with the Costa Rican ambassador I believe. So her phone kept ringing and she was spining all over the place. She then dropped me to the studio to meet the guy who is in charge of the radio show thing.

The guy started to explain everything about the program to me and Takako would translate for me... I initially thought that I would have to go to the studio every month to do my recordings but its not like that... Its wayyy more flexible...I would do my recordings in my apartment and email the final product to them in mp3 format using one of those big file sender websites. They will then edit whatever they need to then it will be aired. However, this will only be accessible via internet and cell phone, its not on the regular radio... The internet program can go on for even 1 hour or even more but the phone program is only for 10 minutes. So I have to prepare 2 seperate programs. My program will begin airing on December 20th, 2008 on camnet.jp/radio ... and also the 20th of every month. So wherever I am in the world, I can produce my program via my laptop. My first program will be introducing myself and talking about Jamaica. I hope to make it about 30-45 minutes long. My other programs will be about anything I want, as long as I am not saying bad stuff. So I plan to talk about my experiences in Japan as a Jamaican, Christianity and world religions, General knowledge, entertainment, music, whats happening in our world and whatever else comes to my mind. I can also interview people and ask friends to talk on my program as well.. so if any of you can record your voice and send the information to me...Then you can be on my program ... Let me know if you are interested and have access to a computer, a mic and a software to do recording...there are a couple of free ones. By the way, does anybody know how to get copyright permission for the use of music??? One of my problems I think though is that, my program will be in English and maybe a little Japanese, so not many Japanese people will listen to me blabber away in English.

After the program details I went to a store name Sof Map which is inside a bigger store called BIC Camera which is a massive electronic store in Okayama city. I purchased a 1gb ram chip for my laptop as well as Metal Gear solid4 and Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3 (which I am planning to take back soon because I read bad reviews about it). Richard isn't the PS3 a facinating creation???

I then took the train back and my friend picked me up at the station... When I got home, I tested the car again and this time it started working...Praise the Lord!!! I have no clue what was wrong with it... I know that the radiator is sill leaking out water though, so the men didn't seem to do a thing to it on Friday...

Day 248 { JBUYD Chairman } - Saturday, November 22, 2008

Day 248 { JBUYD Chairman }

It was last year this time when my tenure ended as the Chairman of the Jamaica Baptist Union Youth Department. I served for 2 years (2005 - 2007) and I must say that this position came with a whole lot of responsibilities... the details are on my other blog that I stopped updating for a while now .

Today I stayed in all day and read my bible, played games and just go on the internet...So there is nothing fun to write about today...

Day 247 {Car Skid / New Coat} - Friday, November 21, 2008

Day 247 {Car skid / New Winter Coat }

I was running late for work this morning in the excruciating cold, then to top it off guess what??? My car started to over heat...So I had to pull on to th side of the road, then wait for a while, then poured water into the radiator.... This evening when I go to change my tyres, I am going to tell the car company about this annoying radiator issue as well..

So while on my way to work...I was wondering what route to take to go this school, the long some what straight way, or the sorta shorter curvy way.... I chose the longer route which has 3 tunnels. I was told that ice tend to build up especially in tunnels and on bridges.... Wow, just my luck... On my way, to this school, the temperature was -1 degree. So after the 3 tunnels, then I have to make a turn off on a curvy road... I was afraid of this curvy road even before the snow started...So when I turned off, there was a whole lot of snow piled up on either side of the road...and a couple of ice on the road... So I was driving ok then I changed down from D to 2 and started to crawl around the curves in the car. At one point, I saw a down slope which would soon be followed by an up slope and a right turn... I thought the car was moving a little too fast so I quickly changed down from 2 to Low gear...Hmmmm ... My Lord and my saviour...what a mistake..... I lost control of the car and it started to slide for about 5 seconds...hmmm hmmmm ... I cannot describe in details how horrific that experience was....That was 5 seconds I would never want to experence again...I am still in shock just remembering the experience.... In my mind, I started to curse my company for giving a Jamaican these snowy schools and also cursing the stupid car company for telling me that all will be ok around this area...Hey, I know nothing about snow except seeing it on TV... Mommy please don't bother call me now, or start to worry, everything is ok...

Anyway, I got to work and asked the teachers which route was better. They said the route I took was actually better than the other one... Another teacher started to explain that there are 2 types of ICE...The white Ice that is clearly visible and the black ice that you only see if the sun shine on it or you look really really close... He said last year he drove the other route and his car slid on the black ice.... then another teacher said he also slid before....So it seem as if its a regular thing around here....... So RIchard you see I did slide after all... ... not only me, but the other Japanese people tooo ... So they told me that the snow tyres are good for snow only... and if I should recognise the black ice, then all I need to do is drive really really slow and dont even think about breaking or else that will make matters worst. Several persons also told me that if I am already in a skid and the car is going left, I should either continue making it go left or turn left with it....They told me that if I should ever make the blunder of turning right while the vehicle is going left or vice versa.... then may the good Lord take care of me after that....Beause the car will start spinning uncontrollably.... GREAT PLACE TO LIVE don't you think?? Unnu Pray fi mi duh!!!! If I didn't have to drive, then I think things would be way way easier for me in some ways... so if I stay another year, I may ask for a transfer and no car... I may even start taking the train or the bus to work soon...Because this car in the snow thing may not wrk out in my favour at all... Plus thats what my other friends do...I would need at least a bicycle though... But that again will only give the people more opportunity to stare at me endlessly...

Any way, going back home wasn't a problem, everything went well... I then went to to car company and this lady that works there speaks ONLY JAPANESE...The only word in English I heard she mentioned was ok.... I can understand her sometimes, but answering her is the problem... At one point in our strained conversation, she said MAZDA.... So I thought that she was going to give me the nice MAZDA car again from Day 173 ...while they put on the new tyre... But clearly we weren't understanding each other too well, so she ended up calling my company who translated the stuff for us both... Only to find out that she wasn't telling me that I wll get the MAZDA but that I should go to a car shop name "OKAYAMA MAZDA" ... I was so disappointed.. .. I also made mention of my bad radiator and they said that the car shop will LOOK at it...

So the lady drove infront of me to the car shop for them to put on the snow tyres and CHECK the radiator... I sat and waited for about 45 mins then they came back with the car. The snow tyres were on and I asked the guy about the radiator.....All he could tell me was that it was leaking (which I already knew) and "Tabun Daijiobu" (Maybe it is ok).... If I have to fill the radiator with water tomorrow, then I know they were telling me BULL....

I then drove to the 100 yen store and bought a Ice scraper thing and a few other items.... I saw the pastor's wife and one of his daughters from the church I go to... and the pastor's wife said some Japanese stuff to me about a coat... So I thought she was saying that the bible study lady should buy a coat for me for winter or that I should buy a coat for winter ....So I was there laughing and then told them good bye.... I then went to the bible study lady's house for dinner and for the English conversation thing. She then told me that the pastor's wife bought 2 coats for me and some heated shake up business.... So I was like "ooooh so thats what she was trying to tell me at the 100 yen store and I was there laughing and nodding like I have no sense" So I now need to thank her a whole lot for these stuff.. And hey, the coats actually look really cool...

Day 246 {Ice on Car} - Thursday, November 20, 2008 [8 Months]

Day 246 {Ice on Car} - [8 Months]

Yes my 8th month in Nippon and again it seem like things have gone full circle with me again since I first got here... Remember last month I was complaining about I want to go home and yadda yadda??? I am now back in the mode to stay another year, sorry mom, sis, my Church family and my other friends who miss my company I miss you all too... seriously when I think about it, it makes me want to ..... ..... but no no no Im a strong guy ....

So I woke up this morning rushing to go to work.....Only to see my windshield and the other glasses on the car FROZEN SOLID!!!! I was like...What in Jehoviah Shaloam's name is this????? I sat in the car and turned on the heater while sitting in the car for about 5 mins and wondering why this Ice wont melt.... I used the windshield wiper and that was no good..... I went for a knife to attempt to scrape off the ice and that didn't work either.... If I continued with the knife....maybe it would have taken 30 mins to complete the scraping process.... So BINGO!!! I filled a bottle with water and poured it on the car and that worked...I then saw Bryan from upstairs walking towards me, and he said sometimes the water will refreeze when you pour it on.....so its best I get an ice scraping device from the home store. I was also told by a couple people that pouring water on the windshield can mess it up big time....

So I drove to my Thursday school which is in the top 3 very snowy areas that I have to travel to... When I got there, a whole lot of snow was on the school compound and the worst thing is that this school is on a little slope....And again I have no snow tyres. The teachers here also warned me that the SCHOOL TOMORROW IS ONE OF THE MOST SNOWY AREAS that I have to travel to and they HIGHLY recommend that I get snow tyres NOW!!!!! So I called my company again, and told them the urgency of my situation... So they said to go to smile service today, which is the place where I bought the car from... for them to put on the snow tyres...

It was 0 degrees celsius today and the sun was actually shining... You can only see the brightness of the sun but feeling the heat is impossible. I drove to smile service and they told me that they don't have my tyre size so I have to come back here tomorrow evening at 5:00 pm AFTER WORK..... I was like WHAT (NANI) !!!!! Just my luck....and I have to go to that dangerous snowing area tomorrow. I asked them how do I get to that dangerous place without snow tyres?? Then they told me that tomorrow will be ok (daijiobu) in that area and I dont have to worry because the FORECAST shows that there will be fine tomorrow. So I said "OK" and called my company to inform them of the situation...All they could tell me is to be careful on the road and of course, dont be late for work...Yes thats my company for you.... Actually, at a school near to where I should go, there was about 20 cm of snow there and they showed it in the newspaper...

I didnt play soccer today, because they are using the school gym to prepare for some sort of festival thing... All my schools are having this music/acting festival thing around this time. I was invited to one of them but unfortunately it was on a Sunday and the time was a little too early for me... I hope to see one soon though...

Actually Richard, the snow tyres going to cost only 25,000 yen for the 4 plus labour included ... suh mi only need to find the 10,000 yen and mi kriss...

My good friend Sheldon, be strong in this rough time....

Day 245 { Let the Snow Begin } - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Day 245 { Let the Snow Begin }

I must say that I woke up this morning being a very happy man :) But any way, while driving to work this morning, I noticed some white stuff falling from the sky and I was wondering what in the world was going on. I also noticed some vehicles passing with chunks of ice on them.... The further I drove, the more this white stuff got.....So yes it was snowing like crazy this morning and I of course had to take a bunch of photos and make a little video clip http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5ybObLXrTHM because this was my first time seeing snow like this...Everywhere was white... I started to worry a bit because I don't have snow tyres as yet :( .... I also saw some ice on the road occationally, and many people have been telling me that the ice business on the road is very very dangerous...

All the teachers today came to me in excitement because they knew that this is a first time experience for me. They also warned me that the school that I go to this Friday is EXTREMELY dangerous, so they suggested that I get snow tyres for Friday (Keep this in mind) ... I made sure to call my company and ask them what can they do to help a brotha out... Then they said that they can give me 15,000 yen towards paying for snow tyres... HOORAY ... They also told me to go to the comapny that I bought my car from in order for them to put on my snow tyres.

Went to my apartment and my internet not working so I watched the Dexter episodes that I downloaded then fell asleep. Only to be awaken by a phone call from my friend from the park. I didn't go to the English Conversaion today, as they cancelled it due to the crazy snow that has been falling today.

Vany, your last comment sounded a bit weird because you forgot to mention the part that you have a bunch of female friends who you know could possibly assist me :)

Day 244 { A Little Snow } - Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Day 244 { A Little Snow }

At my Tuesday school today, a teacher called me to show me that a little snow was falling. It didn't look like the snow I saw on the TV so I dismissed it. They said that it was just a little bit so my car is ok to go back down the hill... Later that evening I went to another English conversation thing at the nursing college in Niimi where I did the video shoot on Saturday. The 2 girls I did the video shoot with were there along with some other persons. There were about 17 of us in all including 2 of my JET friends... We introduced ourselves then spoke about our studies, then questions were posed to us. While we were leaving the college, it was excruciatingly COLD and I then dropped home my friends and guess what? It was snowing in the night at about 1 degree celsius... It was COLD!!!!!!!!!!

I then met my little Japanese friend who I saw in the park on Sunday ;) we ate at joyful and chatted again for a little while :) :) I have no further comment to add on this :)

Yeah Richrad mi read it over and it did sound kina mix up... Mi call Steven and peer laugh mi a dead wid laugh pon di phone...

Vany, I'm sure that wasn't the first time I mentioned you :) ... thanks again bro and heyyy resetting the router did work :)

Day 243 { Computer Fix } - Monday, November 17, 2008

Day 243 { Computer Fix }

It was exactly 1 year ago today when I applied for the job to come to Japan to work... I had no idea that I was going to make such a decision... Hey but life is too short and time really flies...

Today the principal at my main school asked me if I use the computer at the other schools... So I told him yes, but this school is the only 1 that give me a laptop... I personally take that question to possibly mean "Hey, you are using that laptop wayy too much bro, find something else to do"... Which might be true BUT I could be wrong, and if I am wrong, I might never know in this life time.... So, next time when I go there, I am not going to even touch the laptop. Luckily, my friend Vany called me and he found out I was having computer trouble... So after I came off the phone with him, I tried the memory... I did't try it earlier because I thought that if it was memory trouble, I would have heard the beeps, but there was no beep. So I still tried based off recommendations from Vany and it seem that my 1 gb memory not working... Also the slot where it was in don't seem to be working either.... I saw your message after I did this Richard... So now, Im back again on my 512mb, slow as ever... But at least my personal computer is back up now. Thanks Van..

Went to bible study in the night and we practised the little chant that I wrote....We practised it with some actions that we were brain storming and it was mondo fun I tell you... I should perform this on November 30th, the day after I have my presentation about Jamaica at the Niimi library... Novemeber is such a busy month...

Richard, when mi did seh the internet business a give problem on Day 236 that was the internet for the PS3 ... The Hard disk was for the laptop.

Day 242 { Laughter } - Sunday, November 16, 2008

Day 242 { Laughter :) }

I went to church today and I was trying to paint a picture of how the fishes that I dont like look... I did it with my facial expression and the pastors' daughters as well as all the others who were eating around the table with us were dying with laughter. One of the pastors' daughters even started screaming with laughter... I have never seen someone laugh like this before... And she kept saying Miteru miteru.... I think it means please show me again or I want to see it again... And every time I do it they laugh out... I mean the fishes look like they were screaming "Taskete Kudasai" (Help me please) before they die....

After all this I went home then met up with the girl who like reggae music from the Friday night English conversations....We walked in the park, swang on this thing in th park for kids lol .... and we chatted for about 3 hours... I don't know what this means however... but she is pretty cool.

Richard duh nuh badda wid it....

Day 241 { Video Shoot #1 / Meet with 2 in Okayama } - Saturday, November 15, 2008

Day 241 { Video Shoot #1 / Meet with 2 in Okayama }

The person who should operate the camera for my video shoot today, came to my apartment a little late because he didn't know exactly where I lived. How is it that the Jehoviah Witness guy found my place without me even giving him my information but this government worker guy had some difficulty ??? Any way I felt the urge to simply look outside my apartment and it was the video guy right there peeking around the corner... He picked me up and we drove to the Niimi College for nursing students. I met this Assistant professor guy who spoke very good English as well as 2 of his nursing students... As soon as the 2 nursing student saw me, they started whispering and laughing, which is the usual thing when almost any young female meet me for the first time... I think I would enjoy teaching at this college, I wonder if they want to give me a job there :) ... Any way we did the video shoot and it went pretty well in my estimate... It took about 1hour and 30 mins as well as several trial runs to get it done.... The sun was hot today though for a change...

After the video shoot I went to Okayama city and bought a burger in Mcdonalds. It just so happend that I saw my other black friend who was from the USA.. We sat and shared our experiences and laughed etc... However, he is a little more fortunate than me as his Japanese is near perfect... He has a very high afro and this draws some serious attention to him, outside the fact that he is black...So next plan... Grow a afro and study more Japanese ... LOL a joke a joke...

I then went to BIC Camera to purchase a 160 GB Hard disk and also bought GRAND THEFT AUTO 4 :) :) :) for the PS3 ... I then met my 2 Japanese friends and we had dinner near the train station... We chatted and laughed for a good little while then one of them had to run to catch the bus... The other one spoke a little English and we spoke briefly then went our seperate ways...
When I got home and tried the Hard disk.. It didnt work, luckily I got a 1 month warantee... I am going to have to take it back next Sunday when I have the radio program meeting... So apparantly its not the hard disk that is the problem but something else and I have no clue what it is... If this was a desktop it would be much easier to troubleshoot... But I dont have any idea how to trouble shoot for example say the video card in a laptop... The laptop is turning on but the screen is blank and I can't even access the CMOS settings... The computer just start up and then thats it...there is a blank screen....Nothing at all coming up.... Any Ideas Richard????

Day 240 { Mimicking / No Help Needed } - November 14, 2008

Day 240 { Mimic / No Help Needed }

Happy birthday Donna and Danielle mi twin fren dem...

Went to the bank this morning before I went to work. I went there to lodge some money to my Jamaican account. When I got to work, the office lady said she saw me in the bank. The grade 3-4 teacher told me that there will be some sort of festival and acting thing, where the grade 3-4 kids will attempt to mimic how I teach in the classroom. Why is it wherever I teach, the students want to mimic my actions??? They did this to me at Garmex for an event... But I am yet to see it.

While on the computer today at this school, I received an email from my company asking us to fill out this form for some tax returns business... At least they are contacting us in an attempt to assist with something this time... So I asked the vice principal for permission to print... She decided to come and help me... while she was there beside me, I told her that I understood none of the Japanese that is on the attached PDF file...This was in no way to ask her for help or anything like that, because the instructions for what to do were there in English as well.... The lady told me that she didn't understand the stuff either.... Hmmmmm Really!!! I found that so strange.... The thing was in pure Japanese and it was some simple stuff like name and address etc..and she didn't understand????? interesting... I am sure she thought that I was going to ask her for help so she decided to basically tell me "I cant help you" without me even asking!!! But no harm...all is well ...

Went to the Friday English conversation with the lady who keep bible study... There is this girl that attend and she is in love with Jamaican music. But like so many Japanese in this area, I am the first Jamaica she was meeting in person... There is also this high school girl who started coming to the English conversation on Fridays, and today she felt the need to wear a sweater with the rasta colours and a weed leaf on the front part of it that reads "No weed, no life" ... aaah bwoy the connotations that are attached to Jamaica internationally...The lady that keeps the bible study, gave me a heated container thingy though that I heard is very good in the winter time. All I need to do is pour the water into the container and keep it at the end of my bed.. It will warm up the futon for the entire night.

Stewart, I know that the dame has no H for Day 235 ... but I am sure that if you say dame, people that speak English and dont know Japanese will pronounce it similar to Dave... By the way how is your Kanji coming on??? I can't bother trying to study Kanji at all...

Day 239 { Observation for My Worst Class } - Thursday, November 13, 2008

Day 239 { Observation for My Worst Class }

Hey, I think hot showers in the cold season is the greatest invention since electricity :) Sometimes I dont feel like coming out of the shower at all. And worst, the temperature is falling and falling day by day... My lowest thus far is 3 degrees celsius....I am worrying more and more while the winter season draw nigh.

I went to my Tuesday school today and the English coordinator told me that I have observation next week from some Junior High School teachers. Out of all the classes to observe, they chose the worst one out of all... The Grade 6 class where most of the boys are just not interested at all. The girls are quiet and behave but the boys I can't deal with at all. When the English coordinator came to me and told me...I simply rolled my eyes and said OMG...and she started laughing because she knew why... She said the class room teacher did the same thing when he heard...
Played soccer in the evening but it will be cancelled for the next 2 weeks because of some festival business.

Day 238 { Observation # 3 } - Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Day 238 { Observation # 3 }

Yow Happy Birthday mi Bredrin Richard...And it was on this very day 9 years ago in 1999 when they stole my Jansport bag as well as my Cousin's Gameboy Colour at the Portmore Community College....

Got my third observation today at my main school and this was for the grade 2 class. It went pretty well in my estimate... A teacher even came to afterwards and said Sugoii Dave Sensei :) but again again...I can never be too sure... I am very happy that the grade 6 teacher told me about the comment thing...No other teacher thus far has told me anything to improve my teaching....Its either:
1) They are ok with it as is
2) They are afraid to tell me if I mess up

Well in any case, I am happy that my company hasn't called me about anything concerning the schools, and I hope to God that they don't.

I stayed at my main school today until about 4:45 updating my blog because of the challenges with doing it at home and my reluctance to go to the place where I used to go in April and May. I don't think staying late at school on the computer is such a good idea though, but lets see what happends.

Went to English Conversation in the night but I was the only foreigner there and I didn't really have anything planned so we just spoke about some random stuff.

Day 237 { Japanese Reggae Dancers } - Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Day 237 { Japanese Reggae Dancers }

Went to my Thursday school today instead of my tuesday school and I was bucking down the place with sleep while shuffling around some papers and acting as if I have work to do... They probably know that I am bored but they would rather see me acting busy than bucking or looking bored. I went home and again fought with the PS3 internet... well at least I can watch videos on the internet but I can't use messengers at all.

So many persons in my area find it difficult to believe that a good couple a Japanese people even come to Jamaica to enjoy our reggae stuff and there are even a few dancers. Well here are some videos with some Japanese people doing some Jamaican stuff....

Day 236 { Observation 2 } - Monday, November 10, 2008

Day 236 { Observation 2 }

I got my second of 3 observations today by some teachers from all over Niimi. The grade 6 teacher marvelously advised me to give individual comments to the students by name, instead of commenting generally about them and the class. I did it and the other teachers said it was a very good idea.

went bible study in the night then used the Internet on my Ps3 which is very difficult to operate and lack some internet features. I should go to Okayama city this Saturday to check out the prices of Hard disks as I believe thats what the problem is....

Day 235 { On the Yacht / Laptop Dameh } - Sunday, November 9, 2008

Day 235 { On The Yacht / Laptop Dameh }

Another very very interesting day for me (Hey im on a roll)...

Woke up at the International Villa then had breakfast with the persons there. The guy who was incharge of the villa said that the villas will be closing down soon because the government cannot afford to maintain them any longer. A whole lot of stuff are closing down in Okayama now it seem. So, during breakfast, some other persons joined us then we started packing up to go out. After I helped to put the stuff in the cars, one of the ladies told me to drive with her, so I went along. We got lost.... even though the car navigational thing was telling her where to go, we still got lost. Luckily it was only for about 7 minutes or so, and the final destination wasn't too far off. We then took out the stuff we need to go on the yacht and headed out. This Japanese guy who loved Bob Marley's songs dearly, came with us... This guy seem to know every single one of Bob Marley's songs word for word but it was the first time he was meeting a Jamaican.

So we all headed onto the yacht, firstly to check if it was working properly. So our sailor person moved off the yacht with us on it adn it was going skoothly until the yacht engine decided to give a little problem. We then headed back to the yacht port with the wind speed. Luckily we didn't go to far out in the water...THEN!! When we got back to the port, some mechanic guy checked the yacht engine and it started working properly again. So, we were heading back out into the ocean, BUT One of the girls decided that, "Ohh no, I aint going anywhere on that thing" ... So because of her nervousness, she didn't bother coming on the second time....What a smart girl she was!!!!!! Because the yacht was working perfectly when we were going towards Kagawa prefecture then suddenly, the engine started to act up again in the middle of the ocean....... I can't even begin to tell you how nervous I was... and this was only stage 1 of my nervousness...I have 3 stages.... So again we were depending on the wind to go to kagawa but we didn't quite make it... So the sailor guy decided to turn back and head to Ushimado on wind speed only... Oh bwoy and here the drama unfolds...

We were all in the yacht having fun and doing all manner of madness like:
Singing Bob Marley songs ... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwNAvmRuH4Y
Talking Jamaican dialect.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gK2LpIguo5o
And just doing whatever.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iUutHP_5hQ0

I made them taste some banana chips as well as plantain chips, which they were all seeing and tasting for the first time... There is a different type of banana chips here in Japan, which is made from ripe banana so its very sweet..... The banana chps I gave them was a little crushed so one of the ladies on the yacht said... This isn't banana chips....Its BANANA POWDER!!... ... So after all this fun and laughter...the wind started to handle the yacht in a very negative manner...like making the yacht lean too far right or too far left.... At this time...My nervousness got to stage 2... Because guess what???? I CANNOT SWIM!!!! .... The sea started to make me feel sick after a while, so I went inside the little part where our stuff was stored... I remembered once or twice when the yacht tilted wayyy left and he stuff on the tableinside the place I was, started sliding off and dropping on the floor as well was dropping on my friend that was sleeping inside where we were... This was when my nervousness got to stage 3 and I started asking God to forgive me for all the wrongs that I had done since I was 12. I cannot recall a time in my life when I was so nervous...SERIOUSLY!!! Well except when I had a flight full of turbulance, coming from Miami in 2006. I started praying about everything... This was while the others were outside talking all sort of Japanese stuff...and seem like nothing was wrong????? So I decided that I can't deal with this nervousness so I tried to go and sleep... Now, nervousness and sea sickness don't go well together at all... I was there trying hard to sleep but no no no.. It would not happen.... So after about 30 mins of lying down... I came back out of the sleeping part and just decided to say to myself...whatever will be, will be... so I sat and experienced the winds rocking the yacht left and right while thinking about the story of Jesus in the boat with his disciples... Some one then came in and said ... "Dont worry Dave, we will be back at Ushimado in a whopping 1 HOUR!!!!! So I decided to just wait it out until we finally got there... My my my.... I was happy to be alive....

We then exchanged numbers and stuff then stopped at an ice cream place then a little restaurant place.... I then went to Church with Takako and her friend then they droped me to the train station and I headed to my apartment... I got in about 10:30pm and guess what??? My laptop stopped functoning!!!! Oh my Lord what am I going to do now!!!!! I think its the Hard disk though as it was warning me to change it for about 3 months now...

I think this was a very good day though and it was really fun especially remembering what took place... I think I would do it again actually :)

Day 234 { Bryan's Party / International Villa } - Saturday, November 8, 2008

Day 234 { Bryan's Party / Ushimado International Villa }

Hey Happy Birthday mi cousin Andre...

So today was one of the days in Japan when I had the most fun. The first order of the day was Bryan's birthday get together both at his apartment and at a park nearby our apartment complex, which started at 3pm. Bryan is a very genki fellow and so he had some interesting activities planned for us on his pre-birthday get together. He had this today because his birthday will be in the week, so he decided to have this thing he dubbed "Bryan's birthday Olympics" today on a Saturday. So a bunch of us ALTs first met up at his apartment then headed out to the park.

First we played this game of marshmallo toss, where your team mate would try to throw a marshmallo in your mouth... If successful, then your prize will be some food from Bryan... Bryan is the chef around here so everybody likes his food. .... Unfortunately, none of the teams won in this game... The second game was to swing on this thingy and try to kick your shoes through a little pathway, stairs thing... If successful, then more food... Myself as well as a few other persons weren't so fortunate in this game at all...The third game was to blow up some balloons really big, let them go in the air then try to catch them back...I don't know what Bryan had in mid but these balloons look a little strange don't you think??? I actually caught one so hoorayy, food for me... After this, we went back to his apartment and we were split in 2 teams of 5 persons each. We did a little quiz thingy but I couldn't stay for the entire time because I had to head for Okayama City to meet up with my Japanese, translator friend, Takako as well as some of her friends, for us to stay at an international villa place name Ushimado International Villa...

So of course I had to rush to the train station while my car was overheating (what a time for this to happen)... But I didn't stop to think about it and I eventually caught the train about 5 minutes before it drove off... Hey thats not too bad when compared to my 30 second encounters. Of course, on the train I have to keep myself occupied by practicing my Japanese with the girls on the train :) ... So I saw a group of 4 girls...and of course they were staring at me for obvious reasons ... So I decided to introduce myself and then ask them their names etc... These same questions always come back to me like:

Where am I from?
When did I come to Japan?
Why did I choose Japan?
My age etc...

I then decided to do a quick, crash course in English...So I pointed at my elbow and asked them what is it in English... The other girls were lost as to what it was, but 1 girl said "Elbow" and suddenly everyone remembered and said "So nanja" ... in other words "Oh yes thats right" OR "Is that so.." ... Then I pointed at my dimple and asked them what it was... And there was silence...all of them looking at eachother confused...Then one girl said "Face.....(brief pause)......hole" ... And the 5 of us erupted in laughter...I could not stop laughing for a good minute......Anyway, eventually I got to Okayama City then I had to rush on to another train to go to a place in Okayama called Saidaiji... This was where I met Takako and her other friend who picked me up and dropped me off at the Ushimado Villa... There were about 8 of us there and we introduced ourselves. Most of these persons travelled to other countries before and knew another language outside of Japanese and English... Most of them are also studying Spanish probably once or twice a month......
We ate some Spanish food and chatted, did some exercise routine stuff mixed with some sort of dancing, here is a clip of it.... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2PJa1XAAquM
Then went to bed... These people were really wonderful...
