Day 795 {Book Negotiating}
Sunday, May 23, 2010

Went to the main books store in my area again with a friend of mine. This time to meet with the supervisor there. We spoke for a little, then she said, I can put my book in the store for free, without them taking any money from me. She also said I can let the book stay there as long as I want... Wow nice lady :)

Me and my friend then went to a restaurant, where he helped me to translate 2 poems into Japanese.

Day 796 { 1 Man Shuts Down a Capital }
Monday, May 24, 2010

Went to my furthest school today instead of my main school. I read on my cell phone that some serious road blocks and violent acts were taking place in the very vicinity where I worked before coming to Japan.

As soon as I got home, this news was all over the internet. I'm kind of embarrassed when I hear stuff like this happening back at home, especially when I'm trying so hard to give a good impression of Jamaica overseas. However, because our government angered the great USA... Their media houses are doing everything to highlight the situation around the world... Especially ABC and CNN...

This is what ABC has on its website now...
CNN http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/05/24/jamaica/?hpt=T1

Never before have I ever seen so many US media houses cover something about Jamaica...

So this is my version of what is going on now...Not necessarily the full truth... There is this powerful guy in Jamaica name Christopher "Dudus" Coke, and he is known to be affiliated with the ruling government party known as the Jamaica Labour Party. He is from a garrison community called Tivoli Gardens, which is well known throughout Jamaica. The prime minister of Jamaica is the Member of Parliament for that area. Now this guy Christopher "Dudus" Coke is wanted in the USA for drugs, guns and murder charges. And the USA knowing that he was in Jamaica, wanted him to be sued in the US. But, because the Jamaican government know the possible implications of letting this guy go, they were trying to hold on to him.

This did not go too well with the USA, so they started cancelling visas for business men, politicians and singers... Finally the Jamaican government decided to give up Christopher "Dudus" Coke... Then all hell broke loose... The Jamaican government should have realized though that you can't in any way go against what the USA says... Or else there is going to be big problems down the line... Its the same thing they are doing with Japan now and the whole relocation of the USA army in Okinawa issue... The Japanese people there want the US to go for good... (Which by the way would not be a good idea) but the US want them to stick by a deal that they made back in 2006. Hatoyama, the prime minister of Japan finally decided to give in to the pressures of the USA...

So anyway, one man basically shut the entire capital of Jamaica down... I went to bible study in the night and they prayed for me and Jamaica. A really good friend of mine who lived in Japan for 2 years, came back with his wife to be, and they were both at the bible study. They should be getting married in August...

Day 797 {}
Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Went to the main city today because the ALTs in Northern Okayama had a meeting. We do almost the same thing at each meeting... A couple a persons do presentations then we go home. I took some pictures with the Jamaican group in Northern Okayama...

Day 798 { Book Printing Meeting}
Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Met up with the coordinator of the Tuesday night English conversations and he followed me to a local printing company. I wanted to get the estimated cost of printing a couple of my books. It was a nice meeting. To print 100 copies it would be more than what I initially bargained for but I might try them out... Not sure yet... They said they will print a free sample of my book for me though.

I then went home and did some final touches to the book and sent the printing company the files. I am not sure when I will receive the sample though. I am hoping I can get it by next Monday, because I have a presentation on Tuesday and would like to show them there. So my book is finally finished now!!!!!... Unfortunately, I have no one to proofread it, so there might be some mistakes... hopefully not... I went to bed about 5am Thursday morning working on the book. I also ordered 5 copies of my book online at www.lulu.com. Hey what the heck,
I am an author!!! ......

Day 799 {Am I Being Watched?}
Thursday, May 27, 2010

Went to play football in the night at the college, then went to a restaurant to have dinner with a couple of the ALTs... The guy who just came back with his wife to be, invited a select few of us to have dinner with them. I was a bit late though because of playing football. I some how get this very strange feeling that I'm being watched since recently, when I am playing football at the college. I could just be paranoid however...

Day 800 {}
Friday, May 28, 2010

Went to work, then to karate, then to football at the college, then to the Friday night English conversations, then straight to my bed... Tiring day but I like this.

Day 801 {}
Saturday, May 29, 2010

Stayed in all day mostly updating my blog and talking on skype to one of my friends. The Jehovah Witnesses people visited me again today, and I actually sat and spoke with them for about 15 minutes. They invited me to their hall but I told them I'm not sure when, if ever I will visit them again. I forgot to invite them to my church.

I also ordered Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 finally... This is probably going to be the last game I will be ordering for a long time....

Thanks for the corrections Richard...
At the Tokyo thing, the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Jamaican Embassy in Japan had a booth there... But outside of that, no, there was no form of representation from the Jamaican government...

Days 788 - 794 { } Sunday - Saturday, May 16 - May 22, 2010

Day 788 { Niimi College Fair 2010 }
Sunday, May 16, 2010

Went to the college nearby today, to see what was going on as they were having some sort of School Fun day/ Festival thing. I know a couple of the students there from either Thursday football, Tuesday English conversation or otherwise. It is almost always a pleasure to go to the college ;)

I took the new ALT Chris with me, whom I also introduced to karate recently. Chris went with this girl that we met at one of the local bars, into a car accident simulation thing. The first simulation was a car turning over sideways then upside down. The second one was like a fender bender accident, hitting the rear end of a car.....

There were many tents around with food and other stuff around... But there were not many visitors from outside, so of course the 2 foreigners were the highlight kind of. Well actually there is another foreigner going to the college and she is from Honduras but speaks fluent Japanese. So she speaks pretty much 3 languages fluently, English, Japanese and Spanish. Oh I wish I was like that. The worst thing is that I started slacking off on my Japanese studies. :(

Some of the girls would blush when they see Chris walk by. One of them out rightly said "You are handsome" ... Chris replied by saying in Japanese "And you are beautiful"... lol it was interesting...... I did not stay too long under that particular tent for reasons I wish not to share...

It was an interesting day out of my apartment though... and as I said before, its "almost" always good to visit the college. This is the home page of the college in Japanese

And this is the site in English under construction http://www.niimi-c.ac.jp/english/index.html

Day 789 {}
Monday, May 17, 2010

Called the Japanese ISBN place today after they sent me an email with the necessary documents that I need to fill out. I did not understand everything on it so I called them hoping that there would be at least 1 English speaker there. Nope, no such luck.

I wasn't feeling so well today at all, but I still went to bible study in the night.

Day 790 {ISBN Application}
Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Went to the Niimi college after work today to ask the Tuesday night, English conversation coordinator to assist me with filling out the Japanese ISBN application form. In all it would cost me about US $260 to apply for it...and I would get a reply in about 3 weeks. Based on the application though, it seem as if people need to have a company in order to get an ISBN number.... I have to do some more research on this thing. The English coordinator also spoke to the ISBN authorities for me.... I am really thankful for his help trust me... I feel like I am disrupting his schedule sometimes though because he is a busy man.

I then went home briefly then back to the college to see some students do a presentation on their trip to Australia. To be totally honest, it was a bit uncomfortable for me to sit through the entire presentation, for reasons I wish not to mention here...But I sat through it and it went well.

Day 791 {}
Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Hey Happy Birthday Stewart.

Did nothing really today. Just went home after work and think think think.... I wish certain things would just get out of my mind seriously...

Day 792 { Attacker simulation / Lulu.com }
Thursday, May 20, 2010 {2 Years, 2 Months}

This strange thing happened to me in one of my classes today. I was kind of day dreaming while playing a game with the kids. I was supposed to call out the name of some countries, and the kids should touch the correct cards... So I was remembering on Tuesday that I asked some girls at the college if they were from a place known as"Sannomiya".... It was now time for me to call out the name of a country ... which should be Japan... But instead, I shouted out "Sannomiya" ... It was kind of embarrassing as the teacher and the kids were wondering what the heck was going on... This can't be good at all ... Jeez what's happening to me???

Also at work today, they had a simulation exercise showing what the teachers and children should do if a thief or some dangerous person come in the school. So I was watching to see when the simulation would start. Then suddenly, I saw when this guy pulled out a knife and started to talk to the vice principal aggressively. I thought this thing was happening for real and I stood there in shock. I found out that this was the simulation thing when the principal started laughing...

After this, three (3) of the male teachers came with this stick like thing and started pinning down the acting attacker on the floor. It was quite interesting to see. Two of the teachers
were obviously cowards, but the other teacher was brave it seem.

After work, I went to the Post Office in order to pay for the ISBN number but they were closed
:( so I was planning to go there tomorrow during work. But!! luckily, through my research, a guy sent me a mail where he said people can do self-publishing and also get a free ISBN number on the internet through a site called lulu.com ... Everything is free, except that I would have to order my finished product from them.... They are quite reputable it seem but everything lies squarely on the writers head... so if you make a mistake then that's just your luck... I think I might try them out...

I went football in the night both at the college and at my usual place. Today was a good showing as I scored multiple goals at the college (although this is usually the case) and I managed to score 2 against the opposing team at the regular football thing.

Day 793 { Advertise Book Blog}
Friday, May 21, 2010

I created a new blog for advertising my book... It has only a little information on it because I created it really for the purpose of applying for a Japanese ISBN. But because I don't need the Japanese ISBN any more, I'm just going to use it to advertise the book... its http://davecolly.wordpress.com/

After work, I went to a books store name books freeway which is nearby, with a friend of mine, to ask them the process of putting my books in the book store. The guy that spoke to me and my friend said that its pretty much a free deal, just give them the book and that should be it... But he also said that we should talk to his supervisor to make sure, and she will be there on Sunday. My friend says he knows the supervisor very well so we will go there on Sunday.

Day 794 {}
Saturday, May 22, 2010

Stayed in for the entire day doing some final touches to my book and checking for mistakes etc... I am waiting mainly on the front cover now... and about 6 more translations... Then I'm completely done I think...So I'm hoping to have the first copy in my hand between June 10 and June 15. Wish me luck.

Day 781 { One Love Jamaica Festival 2010 Pt 2 }
Sunday, May 9, 2010

Woke up at my friend's apartment and she followed me to one of my favourite places in all of Japan, AKIHABARA..... The electronic, games, manga, anime centre of Japan that is filled with nerds, strange people and foreigners. I even bought a shirt that has "I love Akihabara" written on it.

I then went to harajuku to Day 2 of The One Love Jamaica Festival 2010. The crowd was enormous. I don't recall seeing so many people last year. We could hardly walk anywhere seriously!!! However, in the crowd I was extremely surprised when I saw a former student of mine who I taught computing to at my last job in Jamaica. Even now I still can't believe. I stopped and spoke to him for a long while, and he said he is now living in Japan with his wife.... He said he met his Japanese wife about 6 years ago in Jamaica, and they kept the relationship and got married last year...Lucky guy really.... I remember about 3-4 years ago teaching this guy computing stuff and he was one of the more outspoken guys of his group. I remember having some trouble with him because of his outspokenness... I am really really happy for him now though.

I also met a couple of other new friends at this event....Even a Jamaican guy and girl who used to see my dub poem performances back in Jamaica.... They both live in Shizuoka prefecture now.
I am kind of broke now after going to this event but it was worth every penny I spent... I am happy I went.

I had to hurry and get out of the crowd at about 4:30 pm because I wanted to catch the 5:10 pm shinkansen (speed train) back to Okayama City, which would take about 3 hrs 30 mins. Eventually got back to Okayama city and then Niimi at about 10:30.... It is a very difficult transition to go to a big lively then go back to a quiet town with little or no activities TRUST ME!!!

Day 782 {My Memory}
Monday, May 10, 2010

Went to work then bible study in the night. At bible study, one of the lady's in my group (we split the bible study people in 2 groups now and I am one of the teachers) told us what normally happen when the average Japanese person dies. She said, friends and family from different places come to the house of the dead person to look at the body.... hmmm interesting... The last time I remember wilfully looking at a dead body was in 1994 at my friend's sister funeral. The last time I saw a dead in a casket though was in about 2005 when my Uncle's Father-in-law died. I saw the dead body because the casket was at the front of the church, with the body in plain view of everyone... To this very day I remember the images of both the 1994 and 2005 dead bodies in the casket.... So I am not a big fan of funerals nor dead bodies...

That is one of the things I kinda don't like about my memory... Certain things simply get stuck and some how never leaves. Especially some of the messed up things I did in the past and I am trying to forget them. It takes little or nothing for them to return to the forefront of my mind.... So it is especially difficult for me to forgive myself...

Day 783 { Mexican Dances/Possible Book Title}
Tuesday, May 11, 2010

An ALT around here did a presentation at the Tuesday night English conversation thing. She taught us some Mexican dancing which was interesting. She taught us a little salsa and bachata.

I think I finally decided on a name for the book that I am writing.. And I basically signed off on the name ... "Poetic Expressions Of Peace and Love" in Japanese it is "平和と愛の詩的表" There are a couple of reasons why I chose this title...

1) One of my translators said he noticed that most of my poetry speaks about peace and love...

2) I used to use these 2 words a lot in letters etc.

3) At the One Love Festival some Japanese guys sang a song about peace and love... :)
What do you think about the title???

Day 784 { }
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Not much happened today...

Day 785 { Capcom Soon On Facebook}
Thursday, May 13, 2010

Went to play football both at the college and at the other place where I usually go.

Capcom to release its first game for Facebook

Game publisher Capcom Co. is planning to introduce its first title for Facebook's 400 million users by as early as this business year.

"Gaming on social networks is poised to impact the traditional video game industry and is a presence that can't be ignored," Capcom President Haruhiro Tsujimoto said in an interview Tuesday. "We have to make our move."

Capcom, publisher of the "Resident Evil" and "Street Fighter" games, followsElectronic Arts Inc. in looking to capitalize on the popularity of games on Facebook and MySpace, a market ThinkEquity LLC estimates will triple to $2 billion in the U.S. by 2012.

Day 786 {Karate Interview}

Friday, May 14, 2010

Went to karate, where I got interviewed along with a new ALT here for a local newspaper.....I introduced the new ALT to karate a few weeks ago and he seem to start liking it now...

I then went to another English conversation thing, where the topic of the night was ...... Love and Relationships .... The questions were personal and the Japanese persons were very shy when their question partner was to ask them something.....hazukashii (Shy, embarrassed, ashamed). Actually, I myself was a little hazukashii when they started to ask some questions...

Day 787 {ISBN Number}
Saturday, May 15, 2010

Went to a nearby town to pick up a friend of mine... Then we had dinner in the evening. I also realized today that I need an ISBN number for my book, so I sent an email to the ISBN authorities in Japan... Lets see how all of this goes...

Yeah Stewart mi want one of those shiba ken dogs as well. But bwoy to take care of them is a little たいへんですね。

Days 774 - 780 <{ }> Sunday - Saturday, May 2 - May 8, 2010

This week had a mixture of quiet times and great fun... I think so far this has been my best week or at least amongst my best weeks in 2010.

Day 774 { }

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Went church then back home... played lots of Uncharted 2 and did some editing to my book.

Day 775 { Number Of Children In Japan Decreasing }

Monday, May 3, 2010

Again stayed in all day, didn't even open my apartment door for some fresh air. Its the beginning of golden week so most of Japan is on holiday. Did more editing to my book and played more uncharted 2.

Number of children in Japan falls to record low for 29th year in row

The number of children in Japan under the age of 15 is estimated to have dropped 190,000 in the last year to 16.94 million, marking a record low for the 29th consecutive year, the government said Tuesday.

In a report issued on the eve of Children's Day, a national holiday, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said kids comprised 13.3 percent of the population as of April 1.

It was the 36th straight year the percentage has fallen and remained the lowest worldwide.

Day 776 { Failed Installing Printer }
Tuesday, May 4, 2010

2 days spent mostly resting and roaming about in my apartment is enough, after that I want to go somewhere. Initially I had no plans but then an ALT here asked me to help her install a printer. I went to her apartment and a couple of ALTs were there snacking, so I joined. I then attempted to install her printer but I could not find the driver on the internet for this model ( Canon Pixus MP770). I think I eventually found the driver but it still wasn't installing...

After failing to install the printer :(, we played some nintendo Wii games until about 2 am.

Day 777 { Good Bye Cath.. :( }
Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Today we had a barbecue at a park in the area. It was a barbecue for one of the ALTs who is heading back home tomorrow. One of my better friends of the ALTs actually :( So there is no one else here now to tell my dark stories to and get a well balanced opinion... :(

I think we all had a great time eating and talking from about 12:30pm until about 7:00 pm.

One of our Japanese friends brought another friend who had a dog. His dog kept playfully biting a couple of us.

Day 778 { I Really love Thursday Night Football }
Thursday, May 6, 2010

Played football at the college today and again this is sooooo much fun seriously!!! I enjoy this so much that if they stop it on a given week( like last week), I feel like something is missing from my life.... Why didn't I know about this thing all along?? Actually it took a very bad situation to get me to know about this thing... If that bad situation didn't occur, then chances are I would't have known about this....

Anyway, the first years girls kept asking me if I am married or if I had a girlfriend and what not.... This has been their main question so far and I don't know why...

Day 779 { Heading For Tokyo }
Friday, May 7, 2010

After work, I rushed home to do my final preparations for Tokyo, then drove out to catch the train to Okayama city. Spoke for a little while to this J.E.T ALT while on the train going to Okayama. I met this guy about 2 years ago when I just got to Japan. I then went to Mcdonalds, then headed for the bus terminus. However, I realized that the bus terminus was different from the one last year... so I had to search a bit... Actually I had to ask a Japanese lady who then searched on her phone and told me where to go.

I found the bus terminus, and it was now time to experience the almost 11 hours journey to Tokyo via the night bus... I brought my PSP with me, so I played a lot of Final Fantasy Crises Core... I think I slept for about 8 hours of the journey though, not comfortable sleep but sleep nevertheless....

Day 780 { One Love Festival 2010}
Saturday, May 8, 2010

Japan has an ever growing love affair with Jamaica, and as a result the two-day, 6th annual One Love Jamaica Festival to be held in Yoyogi Park expects upwards of 40,000 revellers this May 8 and 9. Those who make their way to the festival will get a special chance to experience the inimitable cuisine and culture of one of the Caribbean’s most popular and iconic destinations.

So I got to Shinjuku, Tokyo, this morning at about 7:30 am, then headed to a starbucks to have some breakfast. I wasn't 100% sure where to take the trains and exactly what train should I take to head to Harajuku at the yoyogi park where the One Love Jamaica Festival would be held. So I sparked up a conversation with a lady who was nearby me and we started to talk about all sort of stuff. Her friend then came by and they actually followed me to the train station and told me what train to take...

I then went to my friend's apartment in an area known as Ocha no mizu (Tea water ??)and gave her an update about what was happening in my life since last year. I then headed out to the festival where I met up with a couple old friends and met some new ones as well. In the night, I went to a restaurant with some of the new friends that I met. I found out then that we had a common friend.
I cannot even begin to express how much of a wonderful time I had here ...

This is a clip I took of pieces of the event
