Day 823 {}
Sunday, June 20, 2010 { 2 Years 3 Months }

Stayed in for most of the day, then walked for about 45 minutes to go pick up my car at the restaurant that I went to yesterday.... I drank a little, so there was no way I could have driven home last night. Plus I refuse to take the taxis here... Too expensive... I gave the restaurant owner 2 of my posters. I am not sure if he is going to put them up though... So far, I have witnessed only about 3 or 4 of the shop owners putting up my poster.

Day 824 { Video Shoots at the Board of Education }
Monday, June 21, 2010

Went to the board of education today to do 2 video shoots for season 4 of my show. The first shoot was about Japanese-English. I did this with a new lady that works in the board of education office. We used words like Purin (Pudding) <this is not the same as the pudding we know in Jamaica>, Fried Potato (French Fries) and Choux cream (cream puff) <Jamaicans have no clue what this thing is>... It is a pastry with custard cream inside (as seen in the photo)... I don't really like custard cream though...

The lady that I did the video shoot with, told me that she liked my eye lashes.... She is probably the fifth Japanese female that told me that in 2 years since I am here.

The second video shoot was with the guy in the background of my picture. This was about Jamaican dialect (patois)....I used words like:

Waah Gwaan? - How are you?

Mi cool - I am ok

Likkle more - See you later (good bye)

It took 2 hours to do both video shoots, because we kept making mistakes every now and again... Also occasionally the office phone rang, so we had to cut and re-shoot.

After the video shoot, I went to another bar to give them 2 posters. Then I went to bible study.

Day 825 { More Advertising }
Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Went to a cake shop after work to give them my poster. The owner is one of the few who put up my poster in front of my eyes... He also recommended that I make them bigger, but I am not so sure about that at all....

I then went to the local newspaper company with my friend. They gave me a short interview about my book and said the best time to print it in the newspaper is on the day of sale which is July 1.. Or the day before the sale June 30.....Because trust me, the average Japanese person will forget things like this in an instant.

Me and my friend then went to a local coffee shop and I also gave them 2 posters. This owner also put the 2 posters up so I could see them.

We then went to another local restaurant to give them 2 posters. He also recommended that I make it bigger than the standard A4.

Day 826 { Arrival of the Books }
Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Received 95 books from Lulu.com today. Can you believe it is only a week ago I made the order and they are already here? I thought I would be
excited about it, but I am not all that excited for some reason. Just being totally honest, I don't have much confidence in the people of the Niimi area, where this book project is concerned. Even though I am on TV and some of the people seem excited about the book, I can't know for sure... So I am a bit hesitant to leave thirty (30) books at the book store in Niimi. The thing is that, I am almost certain to get a very very good response from the people in Virginia, USA (where I am planning to go to do a little book tour). But Niimi, I just don't know....

Day 827 {Italy lose, Japan Win}
Thursday, June 24, 2010

Had every intention to play football today, because I missed last week, and I haven't been going up the college to play recently either. I however fell asleep at around 6:30 pm while watching this movie that my Panamanian friend recommended to me. The name of it is Ghajini, which is an Indian film. I woke up back at around 10:30 when football would have been over.

I watched the world cup match where Slovakia sent Italy packing and crying with a 3-2 victory. I then stayed up until about 4:15am to watch the Japan vs Denmark match, where Japan won 3-1. I didn't see all of the match because I had work the following morning.

Day 828
Friday, June 25, 2010

Went to the books store in Niimi again today with my friend to give them 30 books. I thought the supervisor lady would have been there but she wasn't. I handed the books to her daughter instead. I then went to the 100 yen store to buy a receipt book for the hopeful future purchases of my book....

Later on I went to karate. Next week is a competition thing so I had to go in front of everyone to do the routine that I have been practising recently. Last week I did pretty well, but this week I messed up terribly. Also in the competition, it includes this fighting thing where we have to wear protective gears. Tonight they put me up against the guy who I introduced this karate thing to. Guess what ?? He defeated me :O ... Can I say worthless ??... Well he is much taller and has a longer arm length... This actual fighting thing is not for me at all. Learning the katas is much more fun... Well actually the fighting is pretty exciting to tell the truth but I don't like it...

Day 829
Saturday, June 26, 2010

Stayed in all day...

==================================
==================================

Bwoy Panton, I just ignore the statements by the guy. He kinda says random stuff like that to almost everyone. I am not racist so I almost never make a racist comment whether joke or otherwise...

That is a good idea about walking with the tape and put it up myself.... But mi done wid di advertising fi now... Mi jus going to guh round to di places dat mi give di posters an if mi nuh si dem up, mi going to ask dem weh dem deh....

Derri thanks for the complements Re: My photo... ;) and yeah, waking up happy every once in a while is strange I know.. Just telling as it is. The things I have experienced in Japan, both good and bad, I have never experienced them anywhere else.... The very inspiration for completing my book was from a negative situation.

Day 817 { Photo Shoot }
Monday, June 14, 2010

Went for a haircut today after work, then rushed to do a photo shoot. It did not occur to me until last week at football that one of the ALTs here is a professional photographer. She agreed to give me a photo shoot session for free. I choose the black and white photo to go in my book for the "About the Author" section.

Lead a group at bible study in the night but didn't quite finish what I intended to...
Went bed at about 3:30 am because of staying up to watch Italy vs Paraguay while chatting with my Panamanian friend, Mayra. Actually my father's mom is Panamanian, so I already have it in my blood ;)

Day 818 { Book Order }
Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Today at work I was totally out of it. I could not wait for 4:00 pm to come... Very tired and sleepy would be an understatement.

After work, I went home to fix the final errors (that I am aware of) in my book, so I could order 100 copies of my book today as scheduled in my diary. While trying to order the books, the site kept rejecting my credit card. I was bewildered for a while but luckily, I have a friend that work at the bank that issued my credit card in Jamaica. She then made me realise that it was my credit limit that was the issue... So instead of 100 copies, I had to order 95 copies instead.

I am still wondering what the review will be like, especially from the Japanese audience who are probably 80%-90% ultra conservative on love issues. And I have some very strong love words in my poems.... At least 5 females so far, started reading one of the poems and could not continue.... An office lady at one of my schools said, she started reading one of the poems, then she started to get nervous????? At one of my other schools, they were creating a lot of excitement.... Oh boy, what will happen? I don't know....

Today, Brazil (The team I hope to win world cup this year) played North Korea. I didn't watch the match because it was a 3:30 am match Japanese time. And I wasn't going to stay up late again... I watched the highlights though and I was quite disappointed in my team's performance.
I saw an interesting article though.... Who are the fans of the North Korean team??? When they are not allowed to leave the country.... Well, they are paid Chinese actors...

North Korea’s hired Chinese fans

An experienced squad of professional fans are behind those red banners waving in the stands in support of North Korea.

Among the 1,000 Chinese fans given tickets by North Korea for the World Cup in South Africa are actors and musicians who have cheered for China in previous World Cups, according to the Xinhua news agency run by the Chinese government. The Beijing office of the North Korean Sports Committee distributed the tickets to Chinese fans since almost no one in North Korea could have afforded the trip. Xinhua reported.

Day 819 { Poster up }
Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Finally, my poster went up on the notice board at the school I went today...

Today, I was surprised to receive my city tax. I was supposed to receive this tax from last year... I almost chocked when I saw how much it was... They gave me 2 years worth of tax in one.... And trust me, that's no fun... I realize recently that I am losing money very quickly in this country... I am hoping for some sort of break through with something... Because, I can't continue like this, as is... city tax, rent, car maintenance, internet, house gas, water, light, car in Jamaica..This is not working out how I thought it would.... If things don't improve for the better, I have no choice but to go home.... Anyway, I am hoping for the best...

Watched the Switzerland vs Spain match. I am shocked that Spain lost that match with so many star players... And not only that, but Spain is the number 2 ranked team in the world... No one was expecting them to lose to Switzerland...

Day 820 { Season 4 Video Shoot Start }
Thursday, June 17, 2010

Today is the first in a long time that I woke up actually feeling happy, but can't explain why...

Did video shoot for season 4 of my show today. It was only the camera man today, his boss was not around so the video shoot went faster than normal... My show creators also allowed me to advertise my book at the start of my show :) :) :) but told me not to say where it will be sold.

A lady from bible study who speaks perfect English, told me that they play my show too many times, and that they should do a new one every 3 months instead of every six months... I agree with her but I don't know why the camera man and crew don't do this.... I told him and he said they are going to try it out... so season 5 will be in the next 3 months or so..

I again spoke to my Panamanian friend for a long time on MSN messenger. She is by her aunt's house in Colon, Panama... But she is actually from Panama city, Panama.

Day 821 { More Advertising }
Friday, June 18, 2010

Went to karate after work then to the Friday English conversations, then to a local bar to do some more advertising for my book. I gave 2 of the girls working there a poster, plus a poster to the owner of the bar... Before leaving, I saw the owner of the bar, with one of the posters that I gave to one of the girls. She was folding it up and creasing it and seemed to be totally unaware of what she was doing. I am terrible at advertising for my self... And I am a little too observant. Just like how I gave my land lord about 3 of my posters when I last pay my rent, but I am yet to see them anywhere near his office... Other event posters are there though..... Again, I could be thinking too much...

Day 822 { Orthodontist/Concert/Nomikai }
Saturday, June 19, 2010

Today I went to the city, to visit an orthodontist. When I took out my braces 3 years ago, my treatment wasn't completed ... and the orthodontist ran off to America and sold his clinic to some dentists who don't do orthodontist stuff... He gave me a retainer and said it should fix the tooth that I wanted to be fixed.... But alas, after 3 years it is still the same...

While heading for the city, I saw 2 of the college girls that I knew, in the train, so I sat beside them. They helped me to find the bus stop where I should go to the orthodontist... I was lucky to see them because I wasn't sure where exactly to go....

I eventually found my way to the orthodontist clinic and the people there were really really nice. They did an X-ray of my mouth and my skull and also did some cleaning... The people there were very interested in knowing about Jamaica. I even glimpsed on one of the computers where apparently someone was searching about Jamaica via wikipedia. The main doctor there is actually from Niimi. I of course used this opportunity to advertise my book.

Two (2) of the workers there even followed me to the bus stop when I was leaving... I should begin treatment in late August... But with all my bills now, I have to think carefully about this...

Concert

After the orthodontist, I went to a concert in my area. I invited 4 different persons to come along, but all of them were busy. At the concert, all the foreigners were generally sitting in the same area... A particular male ALT was looking for us, to sit in our area... So when he got near to the area, He was saying "white people, white people".... An Asian ALT then said, "hey, but Dave is also here!!" ... He then said "Oh Hi Dave, the place was dark so I could not see you" .. Then he said, "sorry, bad joke" ....
I kept silent for the entire time, because I honestly wasn't sure how to respond. Needless to say I felt quite uncomfortable....This guy has done/said several things since I have known him, for me to be quite suspicious of him... There are 2 other ALTS here also who I am suspicious ofl..... Surprisingly, when I speak to them one on one, they seem fine... However, in a crowd setting, they change... .. All of these ALTS are from the USA... When they say stuff I am not used to, I honestly don't know how to respond, because I am not used to it in my country, or anywhere else that I go to... Anyway, not my problem ....

Nomikai

Me and the ALT who I do karate with, didn't stay for the the entire concert, we went to a karate nomikai (drinking party)... Then to a karaoke bar. It was so much fun..... After the nomikai, I went home with a terrible headache... But I really enjoyed the time there....

Day 810 { Panamanian Friend }
Monday, June 7, 2010

Decided fully to choose lulu.com instead of the printing company in Niimi to print my book. So, I went to the bank to lodge the money for the book purchase. Later, I went to bible study and lead one of the groups.

Chatted with a friend from Panama, who I met in 2007. We chatted on MSN for almost 3 hours. Even though she speaks very little English.

Day 811 { Book Editing }
Tueday, June 8, 2010

Because I was up so late chatting with my Panamanian friend, I was quite out of it today at work. But I fought through. After work, I went to meet the coordinator of the Tuesday night English conversation thing, for him to help me edit the Japanese section of my book. Thanks again Yamauchi sensei...

I then went to the English conversation thing in the night. Tonight, a Chinese girl who attends one of the high schools in Niimi, did a presentation. Even though she would be in her final year of high school in Japan, she has to go back 2 grades when she returns to China. She plays this Chinese stringed instrument quite well.

I am planning also to put an advertisement for my book, in the local newspaper. It will be free of charge. One of the persons who work for the local newspaper, gave me a short interview after the Chinese girl did her presentation tonight.

Day 812
Wednesday, June 9, 2010

I gave the school I went to today, a poster for my book since last week. But, I noticed that the poster was still on one of the teachers' desks. So I asked the office lady if it was a bad idea to put up the poster. She said no but it is better to wait until it is open day (which is soon) so they can tell the kid's parents about it...

I went to the city office as well, to ask one of my friends there if he could place an ad for me in another one of the local papers. He said that it would have to go through the board of education for approval. I of course told him to forget about that idea. If the board of Education knows something, they are probably going to say something to my company..... And that I don't want to happen.... He said he will take 3 of my flyers though and help me with the advertising.

I am of course a bit nervous about this book venture... Wondering which way it is going to go. Sometimes I think its going to go really well, other times I think its going to go bad. As I wrote in my book, they are only a handful of people who are encouraging me on this venture...

Day 813 { More Book Editing }
Thursday, June 10, 2010

Edited the English part of my book on skype with my friend who I met up with in Kochi prefecture last month. We took over 4 hours going through the details. I had some subtle errors that I could in no way see by myself... Thanks again Diane...

I then went to play football at about 9pm and again I had a bad showing...

I recently set up a fan page on facebook. So far I have 135 fans... Not too bad ... But I plan on printing only 100 books at first as a test.

On the fan page, I put up some of my performances

1) Brazil 2006 -

Day 814 { The cove }
Friday, June 11, 2010

After work, I went to karate then to the Friday night English conversation thing. At karate, I had to show case the most recent kata I learnt, in front of the other karate students and teachers. The judge said I need to work more on my kick.

Watched a documentary called the cove.... It is about this guy (Ric O Barry) who starred in this old film from years ago called flipper. Flipper was about a loving dolphin, but the guy who starred in it wants to highlight some stuff that is happening in a place called Taiji in Wakayama, Japan. At this place, they slaughter countless wales and dolphins, sometimes for food, other times for no reason. The guy wants this act to stop. The film was quite interesting and it actually won an academy award this year for best documentary.

I personally don't see the big deal if Japanese want to eat whale and dolphins. They are animals just like cows and goats..... If the animals were endangered, then I could see the concern, but if it was just because of this guy's and his friend's love for these animals... Then there is no point...

Watched the 2 opening matches of world cup 2010.

1 South AfricaSouth Africa vs MexicoMexico 1

0 UruguayUruguay vs FranceFrance 0

I don't have to be streaming on the internet, because all matches are live on TV in Japan.

Day 802
Sunday, May 30, 2010

Went work today for open day ( 参観日 ), where the parents of the kids came to watch their kids being taught. I had only one class, which was supposed to be the grade 2 class, but they changed it on me at the last moment saying it is the grade 1 class. The teacher also made a sudden change on me for one of the games that we played, and I was for about 30 seconds, confused in front of the parents. I hate these sudden changes so much.

After this one class, I had to sit at work for the entire day doing absolutely nothing. This is what I hate about my job. I do appreciate it though... If there was some sort of mix between rest time and being busy, that would be great. In Jamaica, I was super busy, in Japan, not busy at all, except with random after school activities which I don't have to attend...

The Vice principal came to me today and asked me if Jamaica was ok. I told him a part of the story about what was going on. So yes, in the middle of no where, some of the persons know what is going in Jamaica.

=====================

Day 803
Monday, May 31, 2010

Didn't go to work today because I worked yesterday. Met with the printing company in Niimi that I was considering to print my books with. They said they would give me a sample but, unfortunately because today was the last day of the month, they were extremely busy. So, I think they either forgot about me or they didn't have the time. They ended up giving me only a single page to show me what the paper quality would be like.

The company owner showed me around the building though and introduced me to a couple of his staff workers. His wife then took me to a nearby coffee shop where we spoke for a while. When we were leaving, I wasn't sure if the paper they gave me was all I was supposed to get, so I asked his wife, who called the company owner. He said yup, that was all I was to get. She then apologised for the mis-communication. Later on she called me to collect a relatively large poster size paper of the front cover of my book.

Day 804

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Happy Birthday Sandy

After work, I did a presentation at the Niimi college. I invited a couple of persons but they all seemed to busy this time around. I did the presentation though and it went pretty well I think. I spoke about me trip to South Korea, Tokyo, Kochi, Kobe, Kyoto and random things I did around Niimi between March and May. Actually I also went to Hiroshima in April, but I didn't really take any photos.

I also advertised me book there and started giving out flyers. The sample of my books should have arrived today, but the delivery company came at 11:30 am while I was at work.
=========================
=========================

Day 805
Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Received my five book samples today from lulu.com. I like the quality of the book cover but the pages are sort of poor in my estimate. I can't believe that I just ordered these books like Thursday morning and they are already here. They had to do the delivery at one of my schools because by the time I get home, they would stop delivering... At least that was what I understood from what the lady was telling me.

Went to the book store in my area again with my friend. The supervisor and her daughter seemed to like the book and the poetry. She said I should leave 30 copies there and see how it will go. The people I show so far, seem to be excited about it... But I know all too well not to get my hopes up too much in Japan.

==========================
==========================

Day 806
Thursday, June 3, 2010

Showed my book sample to the teachers at my school today. And they were quite excited and were asking who I wrote some of the poems to etc. Many of the poems were actually written like 7 - 10 years ago.

I went to play football at the college but I forgot that one of the guys told me something about not going to be there this week. I wasn't sure if he said that he wasn't going to be there or no body would be there. I found out the hard way that he actually meant that no one would be there to play football. So I went back to my apartment disappointed and fell asleep. I also didn't bother going to the other football thing either.

I received the very popular PS3 game Call of duty Modern Warfare 2. I see where it has gotten some of my friends hooked, so I will stay away from it for a little while. Actually getting hooked on a game in these times for me, would not be a bad idea. There is no one around now to get angry at me or storm out of my apartment.... LOL!! ooh the memories...

Day 807

Went karate after work then to the Friday night English conversation thing. I of course showed them a copy of my book. I then went to a pool bar and also to another local bar, to give them one of my fliers.

Yes so the Obama administration has finally forced the prime minister of Japan to quit... This is about the 5th prime minister in about 3 years....

Hatoyama quits as prime minister

Futenma fiasco, SDP exit take toll; Ozawa also out; Kan steps up

Ending a turbulent eight months in office, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said Wednesday he will step down to take the blame for his Cabinet's plunging approval rate, brought on by funds scandals and the row over relocating a U.S. base in Okinawa.

News photo

Hatoyama also said Democratic Partyof Japan Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa, embroiled in a shady transfer of political funds, will step down from the party's No. 2 post.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Naoto Kan, who is considered the top candidate to succeed Hatoyama, met with him later in the day and told him he plans to run for the DPJ presidency and thus the prime ministership.

DPJ members from both chambers of the Diet are scheduled to choose the party's new leader at a meeting that will start at 11 a.m. Friday. That new chief will be elected prime minister at the Diet, where the party holds a strong majority in the Lower House.

"I apologize for the amount of confusion caused," Hatoyama told a general meeting of DPJ lawmakers held at the Diet. "I thank you all for letting me lead (the administration) for the duration of eight months. I hope you will be able to create a new DPJ and a new government," he said.

Day 808
Saturday, June 5, 2010

Happy Birthday Yamauchi sensei

Went to Kurashiki (the nearest big city) today at another book store to ask them the process of putting my books in there. My friend spoke to some one on the phone on Thursday and this person directed my friend to go to a particular employee. When we went to this employee today, the same thing that I thought would have happened, did... The guy who we went to, was surprised to see us, because the person who my friend spoke to on the phone, did not give him the message.... Oh boy... so predictable I thought to myself...

Anyway, the guy eventually spoke to us and said that it is fine for me to leave my books there, but they would have to take 30% of the sales if the books sell, and I can only leave them in the book store for 3 months....
