Sunday, July 18 - Saturday, July 24, 2010

This will be the last update for a little while because I will be doing some travelling coming soon.
I will attempt to do this blog again in English and Japanese. I know the Japanese is weird for the native Japanese speakers but I am sure you can understand what I mean.

Day 851 { Inception }
Sunday, July 18, 2010

Yesterday after the concert thing, I met some new persons from the college in my area. There were 2 guys there who said they were going to hitch hike their way from Niimi to Tokyo... I told them that I would be driving to Kurashiki (The nearest main city from me) so I could drop them off there...

So yeah, I met them along with a teacher friend of mine who I planned to watch a movie with. I dropped the guys off at the train station then me and the teacher was supposed to watch a movie name Inception. We wanted to watch the 2:00 pm movie but when we got there, they said the movie had already begun so we had to wait for the 5pm movie.

I didn't know much about this movie, but I looked for it on youtube and thought the trailer was interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3XzUYd6nrU And yes the movie was quite interesting, you should try to see it. Its the best movie I've seen this year thus far. I actually felt like I was inside the movie.

Day 853 (100th English Salon) { 2 YEARS 4 MONTHS }
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Two (2) Years and four (4) Months since living in Japan, and it feels like 10 years. In all honesty, recently I have been asking myself "Why did I come here in the first place?" I remembered that my last job while teaching computing at an academy was quite demanding and I was searching frantically every week for a new job. This, combined with my zest for travelling I believe lead me here. I didn't quite know what to expect but boy this was a journey... Maybe my next book will be about my experience here... Good bad and ugly.... maybe the title would be something like "The 1100 days of a Jamaican in Japan" ....

Many people see my photos and think it is all fun and laughter but in reality, its not always like that... There are many fun times but trust me, the not so fun times are really bad. And they tend to over shadow the good times.... For me that is. The J.E.T ALTs have a better deal and some persons knowing what the J.E.T. life is like, mistakenly compare it with what people with my company go through. I must admit though that possibly 65% of the rough times that I go through here, I totally caused it upon myself... Which makes it even harder to deal with.

Went to the Tuesday night English conversation thing this evening, where it was the 100th meeting since its inception in 2005 I believe (is this right Kiyoshi?). The coordinator showed a couple of videos and pictures since this English conversation thing started. It brought back a flood of memories, some good, some bad.

I then went to the local book store again to see how my book was doing... I think only 6 out of the 30 were left behind... Not too bad for poetry which really sound like letters when translated in Japanese.

Day 854 { Table Tennis #2 }
Wednesday, July 21, 2010

In the day I stayed in but in the night I went to play table tennis. The first time they taught me the proper way how to hold the table tennis racket using the fore-hand pattern... Today they thought me the back-hand pattern.

In some weeks, there is this one day in that week that I look forward to. For this week, that day is today. My Japanese tutor's son invited me out with his wife and their co-workers to have dinner. I drank a little alcohol but I was fine. It was really good and we all enjoyed it I think.

Day 857
Saturday, July 24, 2010

Ate out again with another friend of mine. This restaurant is the most famous for chicken in this area I believe. Its called Iroha ... I actually really enjoy going there.

Me and my friend then went to three (3) different snack bars. The first one wasn't all that, the second one was really nice, the third one was ok. I went home at about 2 am.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Went to the main city in my prefecture today with a friend of mine. He lived in the USA for a while, came back to Japan to get married, then worked in Tokyo. He said Tokyo was a little too rough so now he came back to live in Niimi.

We went by the Okayama castle, had lunch, then headed home. His dad is the one who teaches me Japanese most Sundays.

Was supposed to have a video shoot today but it was cancelled because of heavy rain.

Day 847 { Book at #7 / Good bye Dinner }
Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Went work but no classes were held because of the heavy rain. The students stayed home but the teachers had to be there. So I basically sat at work all day doing nothing.

A teacher at this school told me that my book is on the top 10 ranking list at the bookshop in my area. I was quite surprised. He said it was at number 7.

In the evening, a dinner / party thingy was held for the ALTs who will be leaving in August. As always, I tend to like these gatherings, even though it was only 2 of us from my company who went there......

2 persons there bought my book from the book store and they brought it to the dinner to ask me to sign it. My friend also told me that, out of the 30 books that I gave to the book store, so far, only 7 are left. So the book is at number 7 and only 7 are left there now.... Lucky 7...

Day 848 { Cockroach in the Staff Room / Wrong Tie}
Thursday, July 15, 2010

Again no classes because of rain. This rain has probably been falling since Sunday night none stop. At work again, I sat around all day studying Japanese and looking at the walls. The most exciting thing at work was when I saw a cockroach, and 2 teachers were running around trying to kill it, while the female teachers run around screaming.

I was again to have a video shoot today because of a mistake in the very first video shoot. So I should have worn the same clothes. I unfortunately brought the wrong tie so we ended up having to do a voice over thing instead of an actual video shoot. The camera man said that editing is somewhat easy so it will be fine.

Went football in the night and scored 1 goal against the opposing team.

Day 849 {Beginning of Summer Dinner / She cried}

Friday, July 16, 2010

I got an idea yesterday to give a free copy of my book to 2 students at the college for promotional purposes. So I made arrangements with one of the students and gave her a signed copy of my book for free. I am supposed to give another student a free copy next week.

In the evening, I went to another dinner with my main school. These dinner things are expensive, but the bonding and the resultant fun is priceless. At the dinner, the main item was this fish known as sturgeon... It is the eggs from this fish they use to make caviare. I of course passed on this one and asked them to give me chicken instead. At the dinner, the principal purchased one of my books.

After the dinner, me and a couple of the teachers went to a snack bar to do karaoke. Then later on we went to another snack bar. I showed the owner of the second snack bar my book. She then read 2 of the poems and started to cry. I was moved by her tears because it was the first time I was seeing this response from someone reading my book. Especially a Japanese person.... She said she understood my heart. I sold 2 copies of my book in that snack bar.

Two of my translators said that I should consider making music with my poetry. I only wish I knew how to get a process like that started.

The only thing I hate about these dinner parties and snack bars is that, they almost always have drunk Japanese men. I hate being anywhere near a drunk Japanese man because for some reason they always want to speak to me in their drunken state. Not only do they speak, but they want to tap me on the shoulder every 2-3 seconds which is VERY ANNOYING!!!

Day 850 {Concert}
Saturday, July 17, 2010

Went to a concert in the evening. One of my book translators was performing in the band. The concert overall wasn't too bad but some times the music was a bit loud. The acoustics of that location is terrible I think.

After the concert, we saw a barbecue going on down from where the concert was. So me and another ALT went by to see what was going on. We met a couple of the persons there, some of them were college students who I already knew.

After this, me and the ALT went to another local bar where some more ALTs came along. One of the ALTs (the first one to date) purchased a copy of my book there.

Day 838 { 10 Books Sold }
Monday, July 5, 2010

Went to books freeway book store in Niimi, where my books are, to check how many books had already been sold. To my surprise, already 9 had been bought, and my friend made a lady buy one, right in front of my face :) Honestly, far better than what I expected. So 20 is left there now. Although I really hope some of the students from the college purchase it, I highly doubt any of them will, especially because it is test time now, but I don't know. I get surprises in this place very often, so anything is possible.

Sold three (3) of my books at bible study in the night, and about 4 other persons are also requesting for next week. If I continue like this, I don't know how many I will get to take to Virginia.... But at the same time, the lighter my suitcase is, the better.

Day 839 { Surprise Visit }

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

One of my female Japanese friends appeared at my apartment this morning, unannounced at about 8:15 am while I was getting ready to depart for work. I was quite surprised, firstly that she came without informing me, secondly at that time she came, thirdly, I haven't heard a single word from her in over a month and fourthly the reason why she came. She wanted a free signed copy of my book. So I gave her.

Coming from work, I was almost involved in an accident. I went through a yellow light and this impatient fool wanted to turn before the light went green for him. That really tested my car brake. He shouted something but I didn't understand what he said. I should have driven him down and when he got out of the car and see me, I would have loved to see his reaction....

Went to the English conversation thing in the night and watched a former nursing student do a presentation on the 6 months she spent in Australia.

Day 840 { Table Tennis }

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Stopped by a coffee shop near to my apartment today. This was the first place that I gave my flier to. The owner said he wanted one of my books, so I went to my apartment and took 2 of them with me. He bought one, then a friend of his bought the other one that I took.

I then went to play table tennis at a Jr. high school in the city. The men who come there all seem to be in their 50s or older, except for me and this other monk guy. Before I started playing, one of the old guys started to show me the proper way to stand and the proper way to hold the table tennis racket etc. I was getting a bit impatient with him because I started to wonder why in Japan everything seem to have some sort of rule or special technique to apply before doing it...

But actually, when I followed what he said, I realized that I played much better than how I normally would..

Day 842 {More Books Sold}
Friday, July 9, 2010

A teacher who didn't even showed any enthusiasm towards buying my book, actually showed me that he purchased a copy. The others who seemed to be excited however, I doubt that they bought. Another paradox of Japan. I was never expecting this particular teacher to buy one at all... At the same time, I wasn't really buying into the excitement of the others... Because why? This is Japan.

Went to the cake shop today to purchase a cake for the bible study lady. Tomorrow is her birthday but the Friday evening conversation people are keeping something for her tonight. The cake owner guy bought one of my books as well.

I then went to karate then to the English conversation thing and gave the lady the cake.

I then went to one of the local snack bars and the owner bought 6 of my books right there and made a guy at the bar buy one as well. I thanked her profusely. I stayed there and did karaoke and I had a really good time there.

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Went to church then drove to Kikuya Book store which is in the nearest big city from where I am, Kurashiki 倉敷. I went there with my Japanese friend to give the book store 20 of my books. They will however, take 30% of my sales and also add sales tax... tax tax tax, I hate it...

I then went to Japanese class in the night.

Day 832 { STEP Eiken/Japan Lost to Paraguay }
Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Gave my friend Kiyoshi sensei one of my books to help me with the advertising of it to his students at the college.

Went to Books freeway, the book store in my are today again with my Japanese friend. A huge thanks to this guy, who has been helping me with this project both in Niimi and in Kurashiki. We didn't get to speak to the book store lady because she was busy, but she said they will of course do everything by Thursday, July 1...And assured me that I don't need to worry about anything.

Later on I went to the English conversation thing and we did some sort of English proficiency test thing (STEP Eiken or STEP test). It was all multiple choice. Of course the English part was easy for me, but we also had to translate the sentences in to Japanese. I welcomed the challenge and wish I had more opportunities to do this kind of stuff... If I was attending some sort of class like this, I would be fluent in no time...

I then went home to watch Japan VS Paraguay. Japan fought until the very end, they got a couple a chances to score but Paraguay's defence was very strong. Japan lost 5-3 in penalty.

Day 833 { Local News Paper AD / More Tax }
Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Got my normal pay for the first time in maybe 3 months and I was very happy about it. The advertisement for my book came out today in the local newspaper. I hope this will have some sort of impact on the Niimi citizens. I got a few promises from people saying they will purchase a copy but I am constantly reminding myself that this is Japan!!!

I went to pay my city tax today. My tax came up to about US $1800 for 2 years. I am supposed to pay off this in 4 instalments. How will I survive in Japan? Only the good Lord knows. And would you believe that some of the Japanese here are getting way less pay than me? But the difference is that their rent (if they don't live with parents) is way less than mine plus they have far fewer expenses. So they will more than likely save more than me.

Watched a presentation by a friend who does karate with me. She is married to a Turkish guy and they have a half Turkish/half Japanese son. This time I understood about 65% of what the presenter was saying. Wow my listening is improving.What I want to know is how do you marry someone and both of you live in 2 different countries? Possibly meeting only about 3 times per year??? Well I guess that if they are OK with it then no problem. I know I could not do that at all... I need to see my wife if not everyday then close to that....

I then went to a Jr. high school in the area to check out their table tennis club of sorts. I plan to play table tennis there on some Wednesdays.

Day 834 { BOOKS ON SALE TODAY!!! / Final Video Shoot For Season 4 }
Thursday, July 1, 2010

My books went on sale today at Books Freeway in Niimi 新見 and Kikuya Books store 喜久屋書店 in Kurashiki 倉敷 Okayama Prefecture 岡山県 Japan 日本. Wish me luck.

Went to work and had a headache... Since last week I am having occasional headaches, the reasons of which I have no idea. After work, I went to do the final video shoot for season 4 of my show. Honestly, this is one of the major things that is keeping me in this remote, very rural area of Japan.

This video shoot again was done in 2 parts. The first part was with 2 very cute second year nursing students that I knew. The second part was with the coordinator of the Tuesday (sometimes Wednesdays) English conversation class thing.

After the video shoot, me, the English conversation coordinator and the 2 girls went to have dinner at a restaurant near to my apartment. Even though I was having a terrible headache, I really enjoyed the time there.... We learnt a lot about each other there. Today was definitely one of my best days of recent times, and you of course don't need to ask why.

Day 835 { Karate Competition }
Friday, July 2, 2010

Today again I was having a head ache, oh boy. What is this? About 3 other persons said they too are having headaches recently. One of them thinks that maybe it has something to do with the atmospheric pressure associated with the changing of the seasons.

There was a karate competition thing today. I forgot my camera, so unfortunately I didn't get to record it... I came second in terms of score, in my kata category. I was very surprised!!! I also entered the fighting thing and of course got defeated by a black belt student.

I then ate at a restaurant near my apartment with the karate teachers. After this, I watched my team, Brazil get defeated 2:1 by Holland in the world cup. But if a girl like the one in the last pic should rub my head when defeated, then I will be more than willing to accept defeat any time

Day 836

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Stayed in all day. All I did was wash a whole lot of clothes, even though it was raining and also played lots of Uncharted 2, one of the best games I have ever played to date. I finally ended it and now started playing Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 again.

Yeah Richard I watch replays on the internet for the late matches... Can't manage to lose any more sleep.

Yuh right bout the killer instinct thing... I hardly have the will to fight unless pushed... But I don't get pushed so I almost never...
