Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Woke up at 7am and went to an area of my prefecture to renew my Japanese license with my friend. I had to listen to a lecture, watch a video, do an evaluation thing, then listen to a lecture again about accidents in Japan and in this prefecture. everything took about 3-4 hours.

I then followed my friend to go and pick up her passport. We then went to a place called Akarenga to look at some of the first buildings built in Yokohama. We also made someone draw us with funny faces. I don't like how my face look though... here is why...

Day 1253 ( Steve Jobs resign )
Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Stayed in all day.

So Steve Jobs, the head of Apple Macintoch, has resigned.

Letter from Steve Jobs
August 24, 2011–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

Steve Jobs, the ailing tech visionary who founded Apple Inc., said he was unable to continue as chief executive of the technology giant and handed the reins to Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook.
Apple said Mr. Jobs submitted his resignation to the board of directors on Wednesday and "strongly recommended" that the board name Mr. Cook as his successor. Mr. Jobs, 56 years old, has been elected chairman of the board and Mr. Cook will join the board, effective immediately, the company said.
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Mr. Jobs said in his resignation letter. "Unfortunately, that day has come."

Day 1254 ( Hakkei Jima Sea Paradise Amusement Park )
Thursday, August 25, 2011

There is an amusement park only 30 mins away from where my apartment is in Yokohama. I finally got to go there with my friend today. First we went on this free fall thing and oh was it scary.

You fall from I don't know how many feet in the sky, back down to ground level in 5 seconds...That was the longest 5 seconds of my life. Its called Blue Fall...

Check out this video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k35MwrhpEuc

We then went on a roller coaster name Surf Coaster. It wasn't as scary as the one we went to at FujiQ highland 3 weeks ago, but it was still exciting.

We also went on a boat and got splashed. Its called Splashute.

We then went up this tower to see a nice view of this area in Yokohama. Its called Paradise Tower.

Then on a tube boat thing and again got splashed.

Then finally we went to an aquarium to look at various under water creatures.

Another video I made:

Day 1255 ( Another Japanese Prime minister quits )
Friday, August 26, 2011

Stayed in all day because some seriously heavy rain fell today.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan officially announced Friday he will resign after 15 turbulent months in office during which the nation experienced its greatest postwar disaster and one of the world's worst nuclear crises.
Kan's resignation both as prime minister and as president of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan came the same day the Diet passed two key bills he had set as a precondition for his exit.
The DPJ plans to hold an election Monday to pick a new president, who would be subsequently installed as prime minister possibly as early as Tuesday.
"As of today, I would like to step down as DPJ president . . . and once a new leader is chosen, I will immediately resign as prime minister," Kan told a party meeting Friday afternoon. "There were difficult moments and some harsh criticism, but I am truly grateful for everyone's support."

Here is a video of the event. The video is really bad though because I streamed it using my old Iphone 3G.

Days 1243 - 1249
Sunday, August 14, 2011 - Saturday, August 20, 2011

Day 1243 ( Harry Potter / Japanese who were in Jamaica )
Sunday, August 14, 2011

Went to church in the morning, then went to watch a movie with 2 of my Japanese friends. We watched "Harry Potter - and the deathly hollows part 2" . This was the very first Harry Potter film I was seeing ever. So of course I didn't quite understand a few things. You can however pick up some information about the previous ones here and there while watching it. The action and the acting were great. Just for that alone, I give it a 6.5/10.

After the movie, I met up with some more Japanese persons in a coffee shop. All of them were teaching in Jamaica at some point in time. One of them has been living in Jamaica for over 8 years, and is now actually teaching French at an all girls high school there. I met her last year while promoting my book at the Japanese embassy in Jamaica.

The others spent anywhere from 10 months to over 2 years living and working in Jamaica as teachers. One of them taught Japanese at the main university in Jamaica for 10 months. It was only today I met her and the one who I watched Harry Potter with.

Day 1244 ( On the Beach in Yokosuka near Zushi )
Monday, August 15, 2011

Met up with 2 of the Japanese girls from yesterday and we went to the beach. It was like 15 minutes away from my stop by train. One of the girls, is a friend of another Japanese lady who is married to an American. We sort of stayed by their house a bit then went by the beach side.

We had barbecue there on the beach. This was some of the best chicken I have tasted in Japan. The other things we ate were also delicious. Then they told me that the barbecue guy went to a special cooking school. I told him that he should open a restaurant.

We also played a game name "suika wari". You know the "Split the water melon blind folded with a baseball bat" game. I almost wacked the water melon on my turn but I missed. We had 2 rounds of it then we decided to just cut it open with a knife.

After that, we played the "who can spit the watermelon seed the furthest" Game.

We then went to a shrine area where a 93 year old Japanese woman lived. Then 30 minutes away to a festival on another beach in an area known as Hayama. There was a Jamaican rastafarian guy on the beach cooking jerk chicken with rice and peas. But to be honest, the barbecue on the beach before, tasted wayyyy better.

He has a website... www.riceandpeas.net and he has been living in Japan for about 15 years.

Day 1245 ( Meeting Nena Again After 5 years )
Tuesday, August 16, 2011

When I went to Brazil n 2006, I met people from all over the world literally. About 140 young persons between the age of 18-30 met up for a 3 weeks long conference for the World Council of Churches. Most of us still keep in touch via facebook and emails.

So one of the girls I met there sent me an email saying that she will be in Japan a bit and she would like us to meet again. She is doing some sort of masters in international policy something something. She and 14 other masters students from all over the US will be visiting Japan for about 10 days. They will be meeting with some government people as well as some NGO people to discuss probably US-JAPAN relations. They will also be visiting Hiroshima and the old capital Kyoto as well as some other places around Japan.

I went to the hotel where they were staying at, and luckily it was only about 45 minutes from my train station. They were having some sort of banquet thing there. I met her and a couple of her other friends at the banquet thing. I also met the head of NHK's (Japan's main Tv station) English programming.

After the banquet, a couple of us went out to a traditional Japanese style restaurant to eat. I then had to rush to catch the last train back to my apartment.

Me and Nena 2006 (Brazil)

Me and Nena 2011 (Japan)

I somehow hope that I can again meet at least 50 of the 140 persons I met in Brazil. So far I am at 3.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Woke up with a slight headache. So all I did was stay at my apartment and started playing Assassin's Creed 2 again.

Google just announced that it is acquiringMotorola Mobility. The search and online advertising company is buying the company for approximately $12.5 billion (or $40 per share), in cash. The price represents a premium of 63 percent to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares last Friday. Google had about $39 billion in cash at last count.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Had evening conversation again. this time we spoke mainly about the countries that she had the most memorable experiences in. She said India, Belgium and France. She told me a long story about her trip to India. It was very interesting, had me laughing for a while.

After the lesson, I went to a Hawaiian restaurant with my friend.

Day 1248 ( Stand-by / 6.8 Magnitude quake )
Friday, August 19, 2011

Someone from my company called me today and asked if I could be a stand-by for a Jr. High school kids camp in an area name Hongodai. The stand-by was just in case enough Jr. high school English teachers didn't show up. However, if enough showed up, then I could just go back to my apartment.

To be totally honest, I didn't want to do it but I would be paid 2000 yen if I go to the location and don't have to do anything. And 8000 yen if I had to stay for the 7 hours. So I went and thankfully they had enough, so I just went back to my apartment.

Felt an earthquake today. It wasn't so long nor was it so heavy in my apartment. But it was BIG at the epicenter.

M6.8 quake jolts Tohoku

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted the Tohoku region Friday afternoon, but caused no abnormalities at the crisis-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, the Meteorological Agency and Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.
The 2:36 p.m. quake measured lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale to 7 in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, and it also rattled wide areas in Japan from Hokkaido to the Kinki region near Osaka.
The agency temporarily issued a tsunami warning to Miyagi and Fukushima, but no tidal waves were observed. The warning was lifted about 40 minutes later.
Along with the Fukushima plant, the Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi operated by Tohoku Electric Power Co. and Tepco's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata Prefecture were operating normally after the quake.

Day 1236 ( Murderous Heat in Japan )
Sunday, August 7, 2011

Went to church in the morning, then visited the plaza in Niimi briefly.

If you think Jamaica is hot.... check out what is going on in Japan... Actually Japanese and Jamaicans alike mistakenly assume that Jamaica is hotter than Japan. But anyone who visited both countries know the real truth.. check this out:

Temperatures exceeded 35 degrees C / 95 degrees F in many regions Thursday, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue a severe heat alert to 29 prefectures.

As of 5 p.m., three people had died and 14 others were in serious condition due to heatstroke. A total of 729 people were rushed to hospitals in all prefectures except Okinawa.

In Chiba Prefecture, an 86-year-old man in Inzai, apparently a farmer, died of heatstroke after collapsing inside a plastic greenhouse in the morning, local police said, while in Nagareyama, a 61-year-old factory worker succumbed to the heat. A 48-year-old man also died of heatstroke in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Day 1237 ( My picture on a poster )
Monday, August 8, 2011

My watch battery suddenly died, so I got a new battery at the Plaza in Niimi. I had this watch since 2007. However, the guy who fixed my watch showed me something about it that I didn't know all these years.

I also went to the supermarket where I saw a poster with me on it. It was a poster advertising the yearly September 11 concert. I performed poems for the concert last year and the year before.

Day 1238 ( Back at Karate )
Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Had lunch at a relatively new Italian restaurant in Niimi. This was my 3rd time going there. The owner lived in Tokyo for about 10 years.

Later in the evening, I went to karate (first time in 4 months). I of course surprised everyone with my visit.

Day 1239 ( Presentation About Yokohama )
Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Did a presentation about my life in Yokohama, at the public university in Niimi. Only a few people came but it still went well I think.

I then went to dinner with my former land lord. The owner of the restaurant I went to, told me that he had an operation recently and had to stop working for 2 months. But he is fine now.

Day 1240 ( A Visit to Okayama City )
Thursday, August 11, 2011

Went to Okayama city, walked around a bit in the scorching heat, headed for a Jamaican store but the owner wasn't there. So I headed back to Niimi, didn't want to stay too long in the city.

When I got back to Niimi my host mom picked me up and we went to a store to have this thing known a kakigoori... its pretty much shaved ice with syrup and condensed milk.

In the evening, I had dinner with a friend of mine, who introduced me to some others.

===========================

===========================
Day 1241 ( Video Shoot )
Friday, August 12, 2011

I told the camera man for the TV show I have in Niimi ( Which is still going on even though I am not there ) that while I am in Niimi for the week, we could do a video shoot about my life in Yokohama. He liked the idea so I created a script last week and they edited it to their liking. So we did that video shoot today at the Public University in Niimi. It took about 1 hour.

In the evening, I had dinner with my former barber and some other friends. An ALT managed to come along as well.

After the dinner, I made a 15 minutes stop at the darts bar and surprised them there as well. I really miss Niimi. :( ... The people in Yokohama generally aren't like this in the least. Niimi is almost like one big happy family. Just don't get into any trouble or everyone will find out.

I then went back to my host Mom's house and started packing, because I have to wake up at about 4 am.

===========================

===========================

Day 1242 ( Back to Yokohama )
Saturday, August 13, 2011

Woke up at around 4:10 am and my host mom dropped me to the Niimi station. I caught the 4:58 am train. I was the only one in it at that time coming from Niimi, a part from the train driver. After going through the 13 - 14 hours journey, which flew by really quickly, I got to Yokohama at 6:42 pm. I had dinner then headed back to my apartment. It was indeed a wonderful week in Niimi. I wanted to meet the new ALT that replaced me, but she was busy. summers are normally busy for ALTS.
