Tokyo Game Show 2011 / 4th Birthday in Japan

Days 1278 - 1284 Sunday, September 18, 2011 - Saturday, September 24, 2011

Day 1278 ( Tokyo Game Show 2011 )

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Left out of my apartment early this morning, along with my visiting friend. Then met up with my Japanese friend. We then met up with another Jamaican and his Japanese wife to go to the Tokyo Game show. I can say that I have never seen so many people at one location in my entire life.

The Tokyo Game Show is where loads and loads of game developers show off their up coming games. In other words, nerd heaven.

Games that were being displayed includes:

Devil May Cry, Asura's Wrath, Call of duty Modern Warfare 3, Marvel vs Capcom
and of course a whole host of others... We were not supposed to take videos of the games being displayed, but myself and many many others just simply couldn't help ourselves. They had to be putting "Stop making video" signs in front of our cameras.

Here is a video I took of it.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF1qwVnnCcU

I was standing at a booth area where a Street Fighter competition was going on. Then they started throwing out T-shirts and caps in the crowd. I initially caught a cap but then it slipped out of my hand and a kid caught it. But I ended up catching a T-shirt afterwards. This one. It has "for gamers" written in small letters at the back in green.

Again you can check out my visiting friend's blog at

For more pictures and a better review of the days event.

Day 1279 { 4th Birthday in Japan }

Monday, September 19, 2011

I celebrated my 4th birthday in Japan today. And again I feel like I am getting old. No wonder today was a special holiday in Japan. Guess what is the name of the holiday translated in English???? Respect your Elder's Day !!!! Why did this day fall on my birthday seriously???

My Japanese friend took me out today to a place about 30 mins from my apartment name Enoshima. First we went to an island via a bridge to look at a shrine. We then ate clam as well as ribs at a Hawaiian restaurant.

This is my friend who took me out.

After eating at the Hawaiian restaurant, we went to an aquarium to look at some deep sea creatures as well as a dolphin show. The best dolphin show I have seen so far.

Here is a video I took of it.

Day 1280 [ 3 Years 6 Months ]

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Noting special today.

Day 1281 ( Typhoon scheduled to hit )
Wednesday, September 21, 2011

The principal at my school today told me to leave early because a BIIG typhoon is on its way. So what to do but to obey the principal?

Where I was, the typhoon wasn't all that bad but it had some really strong winds. It also caused havoc elsewhere. A friend of mine said he was stranded for like 5 hours because the trains stopped running for a bit.

Before this, some teachers helped me to locate a karate gym using a map. So I now have the location to a karate gym that does my style of karate. I hope to visit there soon.

Here is the news about the Typhoon.

Typhoon Roke slammed into Honshu on Wednesday and started making its way northeast, with the Meteorological Agency calling for "the greatest possible vigilance."

There were seven casualties in Kanagawa, Gifu, Aichi, Ehime, Saga and Nagasaki prefectures as of Wednesday afternoon. The body of a man in his 50s or 60s was found in a river in Nagoya in the early morning.

Day 1282 ( Chased by a suzumebachi )

Thursday, September 22, 2011

I was heading to work this morning, when I was attacked by what the Japanese call a suzumebachi. We would say hornet in English. I saw the thing flying around, then it suddenly landed on my hand. I shook it off and ran like crazy. But this thing started chasing me.

I slowed down a bit, only to feel the thing crawling up the collar of my shirt. I started brushing and fanning frantically everywhere and ran off again, to which it chased me again. I ran faster of course, and kept running until it was out of sight. Believe me, you do not want to be stung by one of those things.

Look at this video to see what I am talking about

Day 1283 ( Around Yokohama Bay and to the Clubs )

Friday, September 23, 2011

Today was another holiday in Japan. Autumn equinox - the beginning of Autumn. Suddenly the place is a bit chilly. Just 1 day made the difference. Yesterday was scorching hot, today is chilly.

My visiting blogger friend is leaving on Sunday, so I took him and my Japanese friend around to China town, then to the Yokohama Bay area. We also went in front of the tallest building in Japan. The Yokohama Landmark Tower.

We also saw a Japanese magician guy doing some neat tricks.

In the night we went to the clubs in the Roppongi area of Tokyo. One of the clubs was a reggae club name KINGSTON.

Day 1284

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Came back from Roppongi this morning then slept. I then followed my blogger friend to the 100 yen shop to do some last minute shopping. While coming back from the 100 yen shop I saw......
What the heck is that thing!!!!!!

Yeah a preying mantis (kamakiri in Japanese)

World's Longest Finger Nails / Visiting Kamakura an Old Capital

Days 1271 - 1277 Sunday, September 11, 2011 - Saturday, September 17, 2011

Day 1271
Sunday, September 11, 2011

Stayed at one of my friend's house for most of the day today. My visiting friend is still in the Kansai area, feasting his eyes on what Japan has to offer I presume.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 incident in the US. I remember clearly 10 years ago when I knew about that disaster. I was in a math class in my first year of university, and the teacher stopped and said, "New York is on fire". For some reason, I can't seem to forget that day.

Day 1272 ( Worlds Longest Finger nails )

Monday, September 12, 2011

My visiting friend came back from the Kansai area today. Outside of that, today was just a normal day for me.

Check out this article - (I borrowed this article from my friend Yamauchi sensei)

US woman nails world record - for nails

If Chris Walton ever started biting her nails, she'd probably wear her teeth out: the Las Vegas resident has been declared to be the woman with the longest nails in the world.
The professional singer with a combined total of nearly six metres of nails celebrated in New York after being named in the newly released 2012 edition of the Guinness Book of Records.
Arriving by black stretch limousine, Walton, a flamboyant 45-year-old grandmother with a huge bottle-blonde hairdo, posed for photographs on the steps of the ornate main New York Public Library.

Day 1273 { 77 Year old Japanese Sailed Around the world in yacht }

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Again another tiring day after work, so I went back to my apartment and continued playing Modern Warfare 2.

Around the world in a yacht

Minoru Saito, 77, sailed into Yokohama on Saturday after completing his eighth around-the-world voyage, which took three years to complete and included two tsunami encounters.
News photo
"I am grateful to be alive," said Saito, who holds the record for making the most solo sailing trips around the globe and also became the oldest person to complete the voyage — breaking his own record, which he set at age 71.
Saito departed from Yokohama in September 2008 on what was scheduled to be a yearlong trip. For the first time, he took the more challenging western route, which is marked by headwinds and oncoming tidal currents.

Day 1274 { Teacher Unconscious }

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

There are a few days at work that I really enjoy, others are normal, others are just bad. Today I enjoyed, because I was in charge of the classes and everyone, including the teachers were having a wonderful time. My main school doesn't allow me to be so flexible most time.

Today the English supporter lady told me that the English teacher for the Jr. high school was unconscious for a while. He is also black but from the USA. I met him maybe 3 months ago. I was told that he was still in the hospital but not really responding. I really feel sorry for him though because Japan is not the most foreigner friendly country, especially in the cities. I hope he recuperates soon.

Day 1275 (Disgusting Child)

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Yesterday was one of the good days at work, today was one of the bad days. This grade five child seem not to understand that I am a teacher and not a student. This kid saw some other kids from his class walking with me and decided to suddenly flash this dirty wet rag on us. A wet rag that they were using to clean the ground after lunch time. I told him to stop, but he ignored my reprimand and was laughing. His home room teacher eventually had to remind him that I am a teacher and not a student.

I am not sure how to balance the smiling face, happy teacher with the serious, don't take foolishness teacher. If I show them the serious face, they will shut down and probably stop responding to me for a long time.

Day 1276

Friday, September 16, 2011

Another nothing special day.

Day 1277 (Visiting Kamakura - The old Capital)

Saturday, September 17, 2011

Visited an old capital of Japan today with my friend from Jamaica and one of my Japanese friends. The area is known as Kamakura and was the capital of Japan from 1185-1333.

First we went to shrine in the area, then we walked to a site where there is this famous Buddha statue.

Fellow Blogger Jamaipanese Visit / Expensive Cars For Sale in Yokohama

Days 1264 - 1268
Sunday, September 4
, 2011 - Saturday, September 10, 2011

Day 1264 ( New World Record )
Sunday, September 4, 2011

Went around Yokohama with a friend of mine today. We saw some really expensive cars being sold and bought on spot.
This Lexus LFA cost 35 million yen, which is about 451,000 US dollars and also the same as 38 million Jamaican dollars.

New World Record at IAAF - Daegu meet.

So yeah I am proud of my country with our performance in the recent IAAF - World Championships. We came second in the female 4x1 meter relay and we won and broke the world record in the men's 4x1 meter relay.

The reason why most of us are proud of this is because we are such a small island but we have such a powerful impact on the world stage in these events.

Here is the video of the race, I watched it about 100 times already.

Day 1265
Monday, September 5, 2011

Normal day today, nothing special, just work, played some games, had devotion via skype with people from Niimi then watched one piece.

Day 1266 ( More Evacuation Practice / Jamaipanese visits Japan )
Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Today at work we did another evacuation exercise. This one was just in case a tsunami comes and the water start to rise. Over 500 of us headed to higher ground, and it took about 23 minutes. I am sure that if a real tsunami came, they wouldn't have time to be so comfortable, walking and chatting away and trying to organize everybody.

Jamaipanese visits Japan

My friend from Jamaica who has been blogging about Japan for over 6 years now, but never got the chance to visit, is finally here. He will be staying by my apartment a bit then head to some other parts of Japan, then back to my place then back to Jamaica.

I picked him up at the Yokohama station then we had dinner with another friend of mine at a Japanese style restaurant. You can check out his blog at www.jamaipanese.com . He gives periodical updates about his going around in Japan.

Day 1267
Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Today again, nothing special happened. My friend however went to the bay area of Yokohama and to the land mark tower which is the tallest building in Japan. I have seen this building several times but never actually went there.

My friend initially took the wrong train but then got on the right one eventually.

Day 1268
Thursday, September 8, 2011

Again another normal working day for me. But my visiting friend went to Akihabara. He is kind of a nerd. Even bigger than me.

Day 1268
Friday, September 9, 2011

Sorry guys, work has been taking away my fun times. So not much fun this week, except for tomorrow.

My visiting friend went to Nagoya today and will be going around to Kyoto, Osaka and Nara.

Day 1269 ( Yomi uri Land)
Saturday, September 10, 2011

Went to another amusement park today in Tokyo name Yomi uri land. I went with my Japanese friend and one of her friend's. This amusement park was built in 1964 and it has a water park as well as a roller coaster area. We went to the water park part and it was crazy fun. There is a pool and some water slides that we went on. There was also a synchronized swimming show.

This is what the synchronized swimming show looks like. I couldn't take a video of it so I found this on youtube.

@Richard -

The conversation student I had, only had me as a backup teacher. She already had a conversation teacher but he was on holiday, so I was only a backup. I haven't received any other student yet.

The Roller coaster dem did nice my yute. Scary, but nice. My feet were trembling when I got off all of them.

The 14 hour train ride went by quickly because (1) as you said, I was not alone and (2) we had to change trains every like 2 hours or so.

The rastman dat mek the rice and peas, yes him fluent in Japanese. Him married to a Japanese lady I think.

The weed sign - I have no idea how they put that up right there suh. I don't think it is legal. My friend said maybe the guys are yakuza.

The bank account thing, I think while signing up the contract, I gave them permission to take out the rent every month. But I got no notice of when they would begin taking out the money. They just suddenly started after 4 months.

Bolt Disqualified / I-Octane Concert in Kawasaki Japan

Days 1257 - 1263 Sunday, August 28, 2011 - Saturday, September 3, 2011

Day 1257 ( Source Code / Bolt Disqualified )
Sunday, August 28, 2011

Went to church today. The usual Malaysian pastor wasn't there so a Caucasian male from the US is going to be preaching until October I believe. I could not help but notice something he was speaking about.

He told 3 stories. The first one he highlighted that he has a black friend who was trying to reach out to another black person. He then somehow didn't mention the race of the persons in the other 2 stories. Why did he only highlight his black friend?

Source Code

Anyway, when I got home, I watched an interesting, but a bit confusing movie known as source code. It had a decent plot but the ending was kind of confusing. I give it a 7.5/10.

In the evening I had dinner with a friend of mine at a nearby restaurant. They had a famous Jamaican beer there known as Red stripe.

Bolt Disqualified, Yohan wins

So the IAAF ( International Association Of Athletes Federation ) is now meeting in Daegu, South Korea. Today Usain Bolt got disqualified for false starting in the mens 100M finals. However, our backup plan worked, and Yohan Blake also from Jamaica won. here is the race.

And here is the news.

Day 1258 ( Back to work after a month )
Monday, August 29, 2011

Went to work today after over a month of summer break. Oh boy was it difficult. I had only 3 classes at my main school but I stayed until 3 pm doing nothing, just to please the English coordinator basically.

I went to the bank today to pull some money from my account but noticed that there wasn't enough. I queried the situation only to realize that the people who I pay rent to deducted the money. I know that I was always one month ahead in paying my rent so why was this amount deducted? I called them and asked what the heck was going on. They said it was a mistake and I won't have to pay any rent next month. Luckily I will be getting paid in 2 days, or else this would have been a really bad situation.

Day 1259
Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Had 3 classes today again but this time at a different school. I left there at 1:00 pm because these teachers are cool.

Day 1260
Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Same thing like yesterday. Had 3 classes then left early.

Day 1261 ( Evacuation training )
Thursday, September 1, 2011

Today is the anniversary of a huge earthquake that happened in this area in 1923 known as the Great Kanto Earthquake. It had a magnitude of 7.9 ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1923_Great_Kant%C5%8D_earthquake

So, we had an evacuation exercise in case a big earthquake should occur and in case of a tsunami. They said that the tsunami wouldn't really affect us, because there is only a small body of water near to this school. But, they said the water can rise up like what happened to a school not too far away, where the principal told me that sea creatures were seen in the water at the school. Now that is scary. Can you tell from the pic that I was worried?

Day 1262
(Jamaica women wins 200M finals / Jamaican reggae singer I-Octane in Kawasaki, Japan)

Friday, September 2, 2011

Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown held off the challenge of American Carmelita Jeter down the home straight to win the women’s world 200 meters title for Jamaica.

I-Octane in Japan
So this famous reggae singer name I-Octane performed at a club near to where I live in Japan in and area name Kawasaki.

While going to the concert, I saw this sign on the way .... Basically saying that they are selling herb... Not only normal herbs if you catch my drift. The shop is opened only between 12 am and 2 am in the morning.

Anyway, this is one of the singer's most famous songs.

Here is the live performance of that same song above, from my blurry iphone 3G, Ustream application camera.

Day 1263 ( Bolt wins 200M )
Saturday, September 3, 2011

Today I rearranged my apartment a bit to make some more space.

Bolt won 200M finals.
Usain Bolt retained his World Championship title winning the 200m in an impressive 19.40. American Walter Dix finished second behind the Jamaican champion. Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre who recorded the fastest time (20.19) in the semi-finals finished recorded a personal best of 19.80 to take bronze.

Here is the video :
