Day 1768 ( New Electric Blanket / Apple Revenues Getting Stagnant )
Sunday, January 20, 2013 ( 4 Years 10 Month )

Stayed in all day helping my friend to create a video.

By now, everyone who reads my blog should know that I absolutely hate being cold. So I went to one of those famous electronic stores in Japan name "Yodobashi Camera" to purchase an electric blanket. I used it for the first time tonight and it even made me sweat a bit. Nice!!

Apple revenues miss expectations

Apple Inc.’s profit surge halted in the latest quarter, as a flood of new products such as the iPhone 5 resulted in high start-up costs for new production lines.
Apple posted net income for the October to December quarter that was flat with the year before. It was the first time in years that Apple failed to post a double-digit earnings increase.
The report also made clear Apple is no longer able to sustain the breakneck sales rises of the last three years, even with a fresh iPhone on store shelves.

Day 1770 ( Quit Caring for Old people Who are Terminally ill ??? Says Politician  )
Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Did only 2 classes today, had lunch, went home, then did nothing but sat around my computer.

Cut state funding to terminal patients so they “can die quickly”

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso caused a stir Monday in talks on social security reforms when he said the medical system should be changed so that the many terminal patients now using “government money” for expensive treatment “can quickly pass away.”
“Such patients can keep living even if they wish to die,” Aso reportedly said during a meeting of experts, only to later scramble to retract his gaffe.
“I cannot sleep well when I think of (myself receiving expensive treatments) by using government money,” the gaffe-prone Aso reportedly said, apparently referring to massive government expenditures for the public health insurance system.
In an apparent bid to correct his remark, Aso told reporters later in the day that the remark was his “personal view” and not meant as a generalization about the medical system.

Day 1771 ( Heat Gears / Firefox Smart Phone )
Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Had 4 classes today then went shopping for some "heat gears". Went to a famous Japanese store name Uniqlo to buy a down jacket and a sweat pants. Then I went to another store to buy a pair of boots. I got them all for relatively cheap. I didn't know that the down jacket was what I needed all this time until my friend told me. This is what we need to keep warm in the blistering cold.

First Firefox smartphones unveiled

Hmmm looks like the iphone

The Mozilla Foundation on Tuesday previewed two new smartphones as it invited developers to try its new open-source mobile operating system to challenge Apple Inc.’s iOS and Google Inc.’s Android.

The announcement marked a major step forward for the new Firefox OS mobile operating system, which is being built using open Web standards such as its Firefox browser.

Day 1772 ( Cloud Atlas / Japanese Among Algeria Hostage Situation )
Thursday, January 24, 2013

Was supposed to meet some friends today but they cancelled. So I stayed in and watched a movie that a friend in Jamaica was recommending to watch for a "movie night" they were going to have at his house. I spent over 2 hours watching Cloud Atlas and still felt a bit empty afterwards. I still didn't get the full point of the movie nor see how persons' lives in the movie intertwined. I fell asleep several times while watching it, but somehow I wanted to see the end. The story was different from the norm but very complicated. The acting however was really good. So I give it a low 4/10.

Not for people whose attention span is short - like mine

Victims and survivors return from Algeria

The bodies of nine Japanese killed during last week’s hostage crisis at a natural gas processing plant in Algeria were flown back to Tokyo on Friday along with seven survivors.
The clash at the Ain Amenas facility between the Islamist militant captors and the Algerian military claimed the lives of 10 Japanese and six non-Japanese employees of Yokohama-based engineering firm JGC Corp.
“I’ve had to report to you very lamentable results. I’m feeling truly heartbreaking grief,” JGC President Koichi Kawana told reporters at the company’s head office in Yokohama shortly after he returned from the resource-rich North African country aboard the same plane as the survivors and victims.

Day 1773 ( Nyquil / Viagra and Green Tea Combination Cures Cancer??? )
Friday, January 25, 2013

Went to YMCA after my main job. My throat was burning me since Wednesday so after YMCA I took 2 Nyquil tablets that I bought when I went to New York in December. And they knocked me out cold!!! I didn't even take a bath nor brush my teeth, which is a norm before I got to bed. I got knocked out at about 10:00 pm and got back up at 8:00 am Saturday morning. And was still feeling a bit drowsy.

Viagra-green tea cocktail combats cancer: study

Erectile dysfunction drugs and a phenol found in green tea may be effective in fighting cancer when administered together, according to research on mice conducted by a Kyushu University academic.
In the study published Friday in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, professor Hirofumi Tachibana said the treatment’s clinical trials on humans are scheduled to begin in the United States later this year. But he cautioned the public against trying the concoctions at home due to possible side effects.
In 2004, Tachibana found that the EGCG type of catechin found in green tea suppressed cancer cell activity, although some researchers doubted its potency. He then suspected that the human enzyme PDE5 might be weakening its effectiveness.
Since Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs block PDE5, Tachibana tried injecting them into a mouse suffering blood cancer together with EGCG and found that the cancer cells stopped growing.

Saturday, January 26, 2013

Went to YMCA then back to my apartment. Met my friend later in the evening and we went to a Korean restaurant near my apartment. I had bibimbap, chijimi and kimchi.

 Bibimbap

Chijimi - Taste like Jamaican fritters

Kimchi - quite spicy
