Day 2206 ( Adultery Website Big in Japan )
Thursday, April 3, 2014

Rain fell for a while today so I stayed in and watched Mulan 2 (2004). Not as good as part 1 but it was entertaining enough.

I give it a 6/10.

ADULTERY SITE BIG IN JAPAN WHERE MARRIAGE REIGNS

Ashley Madison, the world's biggest online hookup site for married people, works only when monogamy is the rule on the surface but, deep inside, couples want to cheat. That's why it is scoring big in Japan.

The nation that prides itself on conformity and proper appearances reached a million users in eight and a half months, the fastest pace among any of the 37 countries where the adultery site operates. The previous record was Brazil at 10 months. The U.S., which has the biggest number of users at 13 million, took a year to achieve the one million mark. Spain took nearly two years.
Extramarital sex and affairs are not new to Japan, but a site such as Ashley Madison is a "a leveling out of the playing field" for women, said Noel Biderman, chief executive of Avid Life Media Inc., which operates AshleyMadison.com. There is a tradition of wealthy men taking mistresses in Japan and its male dominated society has provided plenty of outlets for married men to find casual sex.
The divorce rate in Japan is relatively low at about two cases per 1,000 people vs. four cases in the U.S., although sinking marriages rates in Japan also lower the divorce numbers. In the 1960s, divorces were even rarer, with fewer than one per 1,000 people.
With its slogan, "Life is short. Have an affair," Ashley Madison has drawn nearly 25 million users worldwide since being started in Canada in 2002. It now has 1.07 million users in Japan after opening here in June last year.

Biderman, who is in a monogamous marriage and has two children, insists the social network is just a tool and no one can force anyone to betray a spouse. A friendly uninhibited man with quick answers to almost any question about infidelity, he doesn't shy from declaring he would cheat if his marriage were sexually unsatisfying.
One appeal of the site is that it allows for pseudonyms or anonymity. It's secure and closed so digital tracks like emails don't get left behind, reducing the chances of getting caught. It's far less messy than trying to find an erotic outlet on Facebook or in the office, said Biderman during a visit to Tokyo this week.

Day 2207 ( Maruben fined for bribing Indonesia gov't officials)
Friday, April 4, 2014

Did the second part of a supposedly huge interview today. Will let you know later what's going on. I was almost late for the interview because I lost my way and there was lots of construction going on in the area.

Had some Indian food in the evening.

Japanese trading company Marubeni Corporation has agreed to pay an $88 million fine after admitting bribing Indonesian government officials to secure a lucrative power project, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Poll on number of male virgins in Japan not all bad news

It seems incredible. Maybe it is. Is a Weekly Playboy poll scientific? With that caveat, here is the conclusion the magazine draws (April 7) from an online survey of 600 men aged 25-39: 159 of them, 26.5%, are virgins.
There’s more: 303, 50.5%, have had no sex within the past year; 91, 15.2%, have had none within five years. If this is at all representative of the sex life of the nation as a whole, the national demographic crisis, usually described in terms of a declining birth rate, is perhaps more dire than is generally appreciated.
Or maybe not. Weekly Playboy does its level best to be upbeat. “Don’t give up!” is its underlying message. It introduces five men who didn’t, and whose patience was ultimately rewarded. Space permits a description of two.
It’s not income or employment instability that barred “Mr. O” from a social life for so long. He’s a radiation engineer, earning 7.5 million yen a year. What was the problem, then?
Young love gone wrong, as he tells it. High school love can scar you for life. He fell in love with a classmate, then learned she had a boyfriend. He retreated into his shell. Studying came easily to him and he did well in college, but his social life was all beer and fast food with the guys. By the time he graduated, he weighed 120 kilograms.
Social networking was another snare. It’s so easy, so anxiety-free – why bother with the face-to-face stuff? The odd time Mr. O did meet someone offline, he gave her, if she didn’t give him, short shrift. However nice she may have been, she couldn’t measure up to his image, idealized and etherealized no doubt, of his high school love.

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

Stayed in most of the day pondering about what my future will be. Then later went to teach 2 classes at komatsu. One of the teachers dropped me to a station nearby again.
