Geography Now! - Featuring Jamaica and Japan / Hiroshima today /Jamaica Charity Gala / Dentsu to pay employees ¥2.4 billion for overtime work

Hi again,

Wow, haven't blogged since September. Probably the longest break I have taken from blogging since I started. It's been a busy few months since I returned from Bali in September.

Last time my feature was on Negril in Jamaica, now I'm going on to Hiroshima in Japan. Another one of my favorite cities.

Most people only know of Hiroshima from the atomic bomb during world war 2. But Hiroshima has since bounced back from that a long time ago and is now a thriving city. I lived pretty close to there for 3 years and I really enjoyed going there.

I deliberately avoided using the following 2 pictures as the first picture, because these are the 2 most famous pictures that come up when people talk about Hiroshima.

Miyajima shrine

Genbaku Dome - that withstood the Atomic Bomb

If you go to this area, there will be a lot of Japanese people that will try to talk to foreigners about what happened during the atomic bomb and the sad stories behind it. The ones who survived, were actually then discriminated even by other Japanese.

They usually paint a very one sided picture though and if you ever mention about the Hawaii bombing that preceded the Hiroshima bombing, there is either going to be a fierce debate or they will walk away.

Anyway, Hiroshima is still somewhat foreigner friendly and  foreigners don't really get the usual stares because many foreigners are always there. The food is also amazing!!! I highly recommend Hiroshima's Okonomiyaki.

Day 3397 (Dinner with Company Director)
Saturday, September 30, 2017

Had dinner with a few coworkers and my company director after our quarterly group meeting. We went to Shake Shack in Shinjuku, which I highly recommend.

Day 3407 (Replaced Phone)
Thursday, October 12, 2017

My phone was malfunctioning for about 2 -3 weeks and I decided not to get a new one or fix it because...It was too expensive. I eventually gave up and bought a new one at the apple store in Ginza, about a 7 mins walk from my workplace. They said to me that the problem with my phone has been a reoccurring problem so they took my old phone and gave me a new one of the same model, for a discounted price. Luckily I had insurance on the previous phone.

Day 3408 (Yearly Health Check)
Friday, October 13, 2017

Did my yearly health check today and had to drink barium. I hate this part of the health check because I had to drink it then go on a machine that turns you all over the place. If I burped, I had to drink it again! And I burped several times. So I had to drink it again (just once again).

The doctor was telling me try not to burp, but I told him that's impossible because I have a kind of acid reflux thing going on that cause me to almost definitely burp.

This machine spins you all over the place,
with barium in your stomach!

Eventually the doctor gave up after I told him I will do the stomach camera later instead. Everything else about my check up was fine, except for this.

The results eventually showed that I also have to monitor mi salt and sugar intake very carefully.

Days 3418 (Watching over Lord of the Rings)
Monday, October 23, 2017

Didn't go to work because a big storm was hovering over Japan. So started watching over all of the Lord of the Rings movies. I could hardly remember anything from them, except certain scenes. Everything seemed new to me.

Day 3437 (Party at our House)
Saturday, November 11, 2017

Had a few members from our church at our house today. We had a great time.

Day 3442 (Geography Now - Jamaica and Japan)
Thursday, November 16, 2017

Started watching this interesting youtube documentary thing called geography now, after seeing they featured Jamaica. It is a documentary about each country in the world and it gives like a 10-15 mins summary about the country in an entertaining and easy to understand way.

Here is the one about Japan

Day 3449 (Jamaica Charity Gala)
Thursday, November 23, 2017

I was suppose to MC a charity Gala today in Roppongi, Tokyo but had to cancel at the last minute because my wife wasn't feeling well.  It seemed like it went really well though from the pictures and videos I saw.

Day 3450 (Our Christmas Tree)
Friday, November 24, 2017

Spent the day today setting up a Christmas Tree. I think the last time I did this was when I was like 10 years old.

Day 3450 (Surround Sound Bar)
Saturday, November 25, 2017

Me and Takako love to watch movies. We have slightly different tastes but we both love movies and the cinema. Movie tickets are expensive, so we bought a huge TV before we moved in and just recently a Yamaha surround sound bar. So it sounds exactly like in the theatre.

Day 3451 (Jamaican Restaurant Christmas Dinner)
Friday, December 1, 2017

Invited a couple of people from my office to have dinner at the Jamaican Restaurant in Shibuya tonight. We did the same thing last year as well. This year more people came and it was pretty decent. Our director said we should do this twice a year.

Day 3465 (Mitsui Outlet Mall)
Saturday, December 9, 2017

There is a huge sale going on at the Mitsui Outlet Mall not too far from where I live. up to 70% and 80% off certain really good stuff. I bought these sneakers for only 1000 yen or US 8$.

They are kind of futsal sneakers but can be worn like regular sneakers.

I probably won't be blogging again until 2018. So until then, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Dentsu to pay employees ¥2.4 billion for overtime work after conviction for labor violations

The 5th Largest Advertising Agency in the world

Kyodo - Japan times
Advertising giant Dentsu Inc. said Tuesday it will pay about ¥2.4 billion to its employees next month in unpaid overtime for the two years up to March 2017 following its conviction of labor practice violations.
Some workers at Dentsu refrained from reporting overtime when they were checking data or doing other office work beyond their regular hours, regarding the extra hours as “self-improvement” activities, the company said.
Dentsu began encouraging its workers to report their unpaid overtime hours after labor inspectors ordered the company to scrutinize their working hours and conditions.
In October, the ad agency was ordered by a court to pay ¥500,000 for labor practice violations that resulted in the 2015 suicide of a female employee due to excessive overtime.
The company’s practice that led to the death of 24-year-old Matsuri Takahashi sparked a nationwide debate over severe working conditions in Japan and prodded the government and business circles to start improving working environments.
In its earnings report for the January-September period, Dentsu earmarked some ¥2.37 billion for “lump sum payments related to working hours.”
