Day 255 { Presentation About Jamaica } - Saturday, November 29, 2008

Day 255 { Presentation About Jamaica }

So today me and one of the JETs from the USA had a presentation about our respective countries. The JET did her presentation first and she took about 55 minutes... I learned some interesting facts about America that I didn't know previously... Like the different Native American tribes that were scattered all over the country....I thought the Native American tribes were settled only in one place and not all over the current USA. She also spoke a whole lot about Obama. It's really impressive though that the country actually voted for a dark-skinned man when 80% of their population is white. That in itself is probably beyond anyone's understanding...

In my presentation, I spoke about Jamaican stuff like our:

location - Just south of Cuba

- Histor
y - About the Taino/Arawak Indians and Christopher Columbus as well as the English.

- Beaches - A
bout Sandals and some other resorts as well as hotels.

- Food - Like ackee and Jerk Chicken as well as Blue Mountain Coffee that 85% of it is exported to Japan but none of them knew it came from Jamaica.

Music and
how many Japanese especially in Tokyo and Osaka really really love Reggae Music.

Sports - Including how we defeated Japan in world cup football 98 and of course about Usain Bolt.

Climate - That we don't have snow and that we are always warm all year round. I also showed them a clip of hurricane Dean that I took.

Religi
on - That the dominant religion is Christianity and we have the most churches per square mile in the world...

Not many people were there in total but hey, I got paid for the presentation. I wasn't keeping tab on the time but I estimate that I took maybe 40 - 45 minutes. I played 2 Bob Marley songs and Harry Belafonte's song "Deo mi seh deo" ... The lady that planned the event as well as My friend from the Wednesday English conversations and the English professor at the Niimi College, sensei, assisted with the translation from English to Japanese.

After the presentation, the lady who planned it, then invited me and my English convo friend for tea. Later in the evening, the JET ALT was going to a restaurant nearby so she asked if I wanted to join her and 2 other ALTs. So I went there with my friend from the park (Remember her from Day 242 ? ). No seats were available near them for me and my friend, so we sat at a table by ourselves. While walking towards the table with my friend, I heard a loud scream of laughter from either of the ALTs. As to why one or both of them laughed, I might never know in this lifetime.
